This information is so valuable. My husband gave me a budget to choose a ring. And I thought the size would have mattered most, until I learned about the 3Cs. I settled on a platinum, colorless, vs2, .89 carat solitaire. And I know it sparkles so much because of the c values I gave preference to, and the cuts. I was able to keep to my husband's budget, and enjoy such a beautiful ring. I get compliments all the time.

Screw the (just) "1 carat" salesman trick. Think for yourself, and find your beautiful and unique gem. ♡

Awesome topic. I spent 6 months to learn how to pick up a good diamond in the class. Before that I have no knowledge to diamond at all. there are sooo many things you need to know to choose a real good diamond. Love this video . ❤️

The diamond jewelry industry is a scam. Look it up. Diamonds used to be rare, till about 80 years ago, then companies bought all the mines and only release a limited amount to keep the price high.

Such a great point. Typically it seems, many people that are looking for a stone seem to forget the 4 C’s when looking for one when they see the “sparkle” in the stores. I think the lights in the stores are deceiving and tend to make even a low quality stone look pretty and sparkly. I’ve learned that a good test after a salesperson has helped you select one, is to take the stone to a window with natural lighting to see how much sparkle it has. A jeweler taught me that many years ago and said it was important because most of us aren’t standing under the brilliant lighting a store has most of our days. I found this to be a good test for myself after I have narrowed down the most important factors of the 4 C’s. Personally I prefer, as you said, the prettier stone over a few points of a carat. Great information Jill thank you for pointing out all the factors one should think about! Kat

I feel like I say the same thing every day but....very interesting. I'm learning so much from your channel. There's this thing in our heads about having a 1 carat diamond but knowing the price goes up dramatically between a 0.90 and a 1.00 makes me rethink things. The only diamonds I have are 1 CTW earrings (I think it's a carat per ear but I'm not sure) made of several small diamonds. They were a gift and I treasure them. Thanks for this information. I think this is something that will stick with me if I ever purchase diamonds in the future.

Jill u did it again!!! I bought my wedding band at Costco in NYC it had the five C's. So happy I went there. My hubby initially went to Zales. I could tell with my baked eye it had many flaws. I did get my engagement ring in the diamond district in NYC. Oh my so many to choose from. However, I got a smaller diamond, but a perfect diamond😉 Yes you are right, sometimes getting a slightly smaller diamond is better if the diamond meets the other important criteria . Another great video Jill.

Never new that about the one caret vs .90 ^ diamond. Great consumer information. My question today is about signed jewelry I have a piece that was purchased pre-loved by David Yurman I bought it because I liked it but it cost way more than its weight in sterling. Will it hold its value or is David Yurman just a fad

First of all thank you ad we need more of these type of videos on YouTube.

You have added another subscriber. And a fellow gem educated enthusiast. Who dabbles in precious gems for myself and family members.
Emeralds, Rubies, Tanzanite ( which I love) diamonds of course and opals etc..

I understand the safety of where to purchase the right stones. I only deal with GIA cert stones. This way I know what I am getting. Earth mined only.

For me it is quite simple. Over 1 carat, has to be VVS 1-2 clarity, round brilliant although the right clarity and color and I would consider a European cut. As for the forth C I prefer the D to H range. Unless of course it is a fancy.
The kinda should be a 5th option. Earth mined ( which I only buy ) and the lab grown. Which I will do my beat to avoid. Part of the reason I only purchase verified GIA stones .
I am rather stingy when it comes to the stones I purchase. Origin has become a large part of the diamond market that everyone should be aware of. Try to avoid conflict diamonds as much as possible. Once again having the GIA report is one way to keep yourself and purchase on track.
The other is understanding the 4 C's well. Knowing the right light, 10 power loop, the table, outlet, girdle etc.
Round brilliant cuts never seem to ho out of style like some other cuts do. But I do like cushion and emerald cuts as well and usually when they are into the fancy color scales.
There is something that had become a serious issue. Sourcing stones out of the middle east. I have seen many stones that have come from India ( which isn't always bad as a lot of gems are sourced from India) but that being said when a stone is at a ridiculous low price and comes with a GGL, do yourself a favor before buying. Scan the certificate or card and view the stone online. If it doesn't exist you will find out which means you probably just purchased a lab created. With a GIA, or CGL and GGL and another trusted is SSEF Lab.
But they are all pretty easy to look up.

And if someone has a 1.8 carat fancy blue and asking $450.00 U.S. well that should be a dead giveaway.

The biggest issue for me is still the Lab grown diamonds. I have yet to fully understand how to test these to be sure. Even with several diamond testers as well as a Gemological scope and a really good Dichroscope. But they bother me never the less. I have heard all the arguments and do not care to re hash all that again. I will simply stick to good ole earth mined thank you.

Btw, I actually get asked the same question on how much a certain stone will cost . Most of the time they say the carat weight, and shape. But that is all. So even with them providing 2 of the C's isn't enough. Considering the wide range of costs depending on inclusions, color and so on.
So good luck with 2 out of the 4. And what I would like to hear from you is lab grown vs earth mined . And any other trustworthy Gem labs. Thank you for the very cool upload.
Oh and for some of the other things I hear. Listen we are talking about a single stones. Not 2 pointers that add up to over a carat. There is a huge difference.

Love these videos, the cut is where I would never want to sacrifice after the carat . If a diamond is cut too deep or too shallow it won’t have that amazing sparkle and brilliance, Color and Clarity are the areas to sacrifice, we wound up choosing a beautiful diamond for my Engagement ring and you would never know it’s in the “Near Colorless” range, even when it’s dirty, there is still a sparkle ! Really love these videos ! Xo
