This is How Anime Made Me Fluent in Japanese. I got fluent in the Japanese language through watching Japan anime. Shonen, slice of life, isekai, manga, I've seen it all. Seinen too! I got completely JLPT N5 to N4, N3, N2, and maybe one day I will be N1. I speak Japanese. I do. Foreigner speaks Japanese. White guy speaks Japanese. I know this language. Trust me.

This was originally posted on another channel that I was going to use only for language learning videos, but YouTube decided to immediately terminate that channel for no reason. It said I broke community guidelines, refused to elaborate, and I can't contact them until September. I decided to repurpose it on this channel and will just continue to upload my language related videos on here.

In neurology.

An apple is an apple.

A drawing of an apple is an apple.

A word of an apple is apple.

Picture of an apple is an apple.

The brain can't tell the difference.

It is why anime is great way to learn Japanese as exposure to the language is seen as exposure to the brain.

The brain will use that exposure to build experiences of that word, context, grammar to gain new XP when meeting that word and build connection with each exposure.

With buildings enough XP, you will reach an XP threshold where what you have been exposed to will be able to use effortlessly because it is with your subconscious mind.

Anime is native content made for natives to enjoy and understand. Therefore, it IS made for natives to pick up too. Young natives and second language learners are not really that different from each other. If anything, we have more advantage by already having experienced our first language acquisition.

Well I agree with you because I got fluent 15 years ago and saw over 1000 different anime and 10k+ episodes lmao
But I also majored in Japanese at my university and lived with Japanese people for few years.

It’s pretty easy to recalibrate to normal Japanese because Japanese is Japanese and when you understand like you mentioned input is huge, then you can also understand normal Japanese people’s conversations if you watch normal stuff too which everyone should. (Like normal Japanese people won’t watch only anime always, it’s okay to binge for a while though)
I recommend 実況プレイ where YouTubers play video games and have commentary for them. Or アニメコント on YouTube which are sometimes slightly closer to real life Japanese but pretty hilarious.

Learning Japanese through anime is the best idea ever. I am learning English by watching your videos. I see you got a new microphone. I want one like that garden shovel, too. Are you in Shibuya? My office is 5 minutes from Shibuya Station. Sell me a new shovel microphone. I want to speak with that microphone too.

Also, I noticed something while I was watching an anime called Death Note, which I am sure you have all heard of. Light's language reflects his social awareness and strategic thinking. In Japanese, his pronouns and speech patterns change depending on the social status and people he is talking to. If he is speaking to someone like himself or Ryuk, he uses a more casual tone.

Whenever Light needed to impress someone, or deal with a person like an authority figure to manipulate them he would switch to that formal and polite Japanese. For example, instead of using 僕 he would switch to 私. I think that's something you don't get from watching the anime in English - which is really cool.

Ok so you do recommend some study in the beginning, Hiragana and Katakana? and then after that maybe some of Genki and then I can focus almost fully on acquisition and comprehension? :)

2:39 Squall in FF8. Localizers made him the “whatever” man. In JP his inner monologues and choices make sense from a cultural standpoint.

Also in EN, i choose the snarky options cuz its funny. 😂

At least 50% of people who want to learn japanese, want to learn it so they can understand anime. Not so they can move to and work in Japan. So this is a moot point for them. People learning a language need to realize WHY they want to learn it. tbh, I wish there was someone teaching speaking/listening Japanese without teaching reading/writing it, because that'd be enough for a lot of the people who want to learn it (and vice versa for people who just want to learn it to read).
