Can US expats collect Social Security?
Receiving Benefits. For expats retiring overseas, how to receive their benefits may be more of a concern than in which system they're supposed to pay and participate. Eligibility for Social Security retirement benefits require 40 quarters of coverage (credits), or ten years of work and paying into US Social Security.

Retired workers averaged a monthly Social Security benefit of around $1,300 as of October 2016. With an average cost to retire in Mexico of $26,100 a year, many Americans can retire comfortably by meeting the average retirement savings numbers. ... You'll need to save even more if you want to retire early.

Social Security Benefits. As long as you are eligible for U.S. Social Security payments, you can receive them while living in Mexico – whether you are a citizen of the U.S. or Mexico (special rules may apply if you are not a U.S. citizen and if you receive benefits as a dependent or survivor of a worker).

Great video! I'm an american living solo on social security of $1300 a month on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica in a sweet little jungle cabina, queen size bed, wifi, flat screen TV, cable, microwave, fridge, freezer, 2 fans, 20 meters to covered kitchen area, bathroom, cold water shower, pool, 3 minute walk to beach, shops, restaurants, public transportation, Uber available. Close to the mountains, and only a 30 minute ride on my mountain bike to one of the most*gorgeous* white sand beaches in the country. I pay only $200...a month.

I have been a subscriber for a while and I have enjoyed most of your videos

It’s so nice to see how open you are about your expenses so that other people can perhaps gauge what is Actually needed to live in the Lake Chapala area
I was kind of disturbed to see one of the comments indicating that somebody it was a parasite. I totally disagree

I look forward to enjoying more of your videos

I’ve just read some disturbing things about the new President, cutbacks in social services, esp. Solar Tropical/IMNS, also the rise in cost of hospital care re: self pay, operations availability of beds as more people are forced into “self pay”

We will retire at 60, almost 61, and my wife is 55. We will have to pay out of pocket for about 16 months and then I’ll start receiving about $1800/month, which we believe will cover all or most of our costs. Five years later my wife will start receiving about $900/month. So the first 6 years will be our smallest income. We do have assets but hoping not to need to use too much, and hoping to keep retirement accounts whole until required minimum distributions at 72.
We will probably live in San Cristobal de las Casas, where costs are cheap. We speak Spanish and have lived abroad before. We feel confident that we are in good shape….counting down the days….moving in 8 months !
Great video !
