I have been collecting Social Security benefits in Thailand for several years - the money is 'direct deposited' into a Thai bank account. Note: I was unable to have an ATM card attached to that account - the Thai bank account that receives the monthly Social Security benefits. I can only receive funds with that Thai bank account. I do show up at the branch I opened the Thai bank account at - with my passport - once a month to withdraw my Social Security funds and then I go to a different Thai bank and deposit some of the money so it can be withdrawn at any time via ATM machine from the second Thai bank account when needed.

I live in Thailand. I have been trying to initiate my SS payments since I turned 62. I will be 64 next October. I suspect I will have to go to the states to initiate my payments. I had a phone appointment scheduled for today but they did not call.

Ben, can a US citizen that is planning to retire in Thailand pre-arrange with SS to have the SS payments direct deposited to a Thai Bank just before actually moving to Thailand? This is assuming that one already has a Thai Bank account before moving.Although, I have heard that one cannot open a Thai Bank account until one is living in Thailand. Therefore, having a your SS direct deposited has to be arranged after the move to Thailand. Your advice is much appreciated.

Have not confirmed this, but I just heard that Thai Immigration will no longer issue the letter that the banks require to open an account . If your not already set up in Thailand, you might want to think about another country that is a little more welcoming to pensioners.

I don’t understand the fraud part. If I have a Social Security check deposited in a Thai bank, I can’t use my ATM the day after it’s deposited? I’m a little confused by your statement.

I have been collecting my SS Benefits in Thailand since 2013. Contact Citizen Services at theAmerican embassy and they can give you the the contact information for the SS office in the Philippines.. In my case I had to open a special account in Bangkok Bank.
