One of my favorite films, although not liked and forgotten by many. Yes, a restrained performance by Otoole, with a wonderfully villainous turn by Mason. The scene where the two meet on the river is priceless dialogue at its best, and performed well!

Fast forward to the James Mason scenes. It was the era when he stole films with a few minutes of screen time. He was magnificent.

I love doing impersonations of James Mason.

I always liked Mason, always very appealing to me, great voice & style, though sometimes he was oddly cast, i.e., as a Germanic barbarian during collapse of Roman Empire, a Mongol(I think) during the time of Genghis Khan, a 19th-century U.S. plantation owner of the Old South, etc. Regardless, however, he always rose to the occasion, carrying-off these uncharacteristic roles with his usual panache, never campy or cartoonishly. Mason was a polished actor through & through. I've seen "Lord Jim" only once & it was decades ago, recalling very little about it, except being a little bored at times, as the setting & subject matter were unfamiliar to me at the time. I'd probably be perfectly fine with it now. Anyway, I'd like to see it again.
