Today we talk about what makes the perfect ND filter, and why nobody has made one yet. We also test K&F Concept's new Nano Tech ND filter. Is it the best ND filter ever made? Better than Peter Mckinnon and Freewell's ND mist filters?

Casey, I don't get why you need different sizes of ND. It's mush better to buy the biggest one and use step up rings. It will eliminate vignetting and give you flexibility to use it with any lens via cheap rings

that x-pattern non-art was indeed art straight out of the 90s my dude.

That wasn't vignetting but polarization. Essentially variable ND's are two circular polarizers stacked ontop of each other.

K&F is ridiculously good for the price. Use them for all my productions

Frewell has the closest to perfect I've seen but the polorization of vnds made me switch to freewell magnetic nds, non variable.

You know, you can get off-brand lens caps on ebay for $2. Just get some of the various filter sizes and you always have something to put on them.

Simmod makes a really good variable ND and they are in Canada.. but smallest is 77mm. Premium Schott glass with no color shifting that I could see and even a knob/handle that sticks out to turn the filter with hard stops and you can order a cap for it too. Step up rings aren't so bad if you consider that a larger filter will have less vignetting on a smaller lens. It's $125 us dollars but probably the best variable nd you can get ... even over the polar pros and all of those really expensive ones. You should hit them up for giving you one to do a review :)

i love K&F ND filters they work great for me. i own te ND+CPL one which has hard stops on both end and don't cause any IR polution on the P4K even at maximum strengh

My variable K&F ND filter doesn't have an X pattern anywhere from hard stop to hard stop. It's a 52mm Nano-X series ND2 - ND32 screw on filter. Mine came in a hinged plastic case which I much prefer over the cute cardboard sleeve. I've been very happy with mine, even though I hardly use it But I have to wonder a bit if maybe you received a defective filter, cause mine doesn't have any of the issues that yours has.
Cheers 🍻.

9:44 You just discovered the polarizers effect of a variable ND filter ! Another domain to explore ;)

I got the prism lens VND 1-7 stops, it has hard stops, markins and no x pattern even at 16mm but the bad thing is there's a yellow cast but if you do the WB after you apply the filter then it's all good

The freewell ones are m̶a̶g̶n̶e̶t̶i̶c̶ variable nd with mist filter, unfortunately only 2-5 and 6-9 stops and smallest thread is 58mm (though they have 67mm ones). Edit: removed magnetic as pointed out below, cap is magnetic, but since these have hard stops they are screwed on.

Try the Peter McKinnon VND II Mist with step rings! You can also stack it on top of other filters like the 10-stop $25 one on Amazon, mostly for long exposure photography...but yes, you should also test vlogging with 15-stop ND. For the cinema 👍

I would look at non variable nd, like the hoya solas irnd. Get a 4 or 6 stop and it will do all of your outdoors stuff.

The sky difference is from polarization. The reason I can’t use vari ND’s is when I do moving time lapse the sky changes colors. There will never be a perfect variable ND
