Been doing off centered spacing for just about everything in the garden after testing I did in '80-83. Works for most things ..of course I did and do use alot of compost.

For some plants, competition with other plants causes changes in growth patterns. Brilliant experiment!

Just a tip from me.
I have black sandy soil and added cow manure and mushroom compost to enrich the poor soil.
Make sure if you have the same soils, and you use the same compost….. do it 3 months before you plant anything.

I have always planted off center as I intuitively feel it's better space utilization and more food.
I never thought to weigh, measure or count with a control as a scientific experiment.
I just intuitively knew it would produce more food.

Also, I was a time management, space management, ergonomics management director and incorporated these improvements into my personal life, household and garden management.

Thank you for proving my intuition correct.❤

Bulb size greatly depends on the size of clove planted.

So I just saw your 6 inch off center spacing SHORT from maybe last year and seems like it did better? Nicely done.

7" off-centred would be the equivalent of 5" spacing. All off-centering does is tilt the grid by 45 degrees.

Noice result. Now next suggestion is to compare that 45degree square packing arrangement you just did. To a hexagonal 60 degree packing arrangement. That is the cloves are arranged in an equilateral triangle.
Yield should increase another 4 or 5 % as you can go back to 6inch spacing then. Or maybe less if you consider the actual spacing of the 7 inch square offset packing, which is 4.9 inches at 45 degrees.
Peace 🙏

Works well with most radishes and carrots, too, in the 8" deep rectangular mixing tubs (with drain holes) that I use at waist height to save my back.

Ok Now the question is; since garlic leaves (shoots?) are edible, does the clove get smaller or stay the same if you harvest the leaves once?

thanks man you're really wonderful on doing this experiments

But the problem is not every head contains cloves of garlic that are worth planting for the next years crop. If you are looking for culinary garlic (smaller cloves) plant closer together. If you want sizable heads and cloves so you don’t need to buy seed garlic the following season plant further apart.
