Local Cuisine looked so betrayed when Ambessa dismissed him.

I love how you can see her mother flinch when Mel mentions being cast out. The detail in this animation is impeccable

I love her scenes with her mother. The only person who knows her, whom she cannot manipulate, so all her interactions with her are candid. Probably intended by the writers that before her mother's introduction to the series, Mel was difficult to empathize with and see more than as just a calculating political manipulator.

1:20 The way her mother explain Mel's heart made her weak and soft is both touching yet painful, she really just wanted to protect her family even if she has to kill or destroyed anything that gets in their way, being ruthless is her way to keep her family safe

Something I love about Arcane is how children have an effect on their parents. Vander gave up his ambitions for Vi and Powder. Silco eventually came to the same conclusion and gave up his goal for Jinx. Mel’s mother took the opposite route of these two and cast her daughter out in order to maintain her goals.

"Is there anything more undoing than a daughter"

Wow, I completely missed on this parallel with Ambessa and Mel the first time around. Out of the main parent figures of Ambessa, Silco, and Vander, she was the one who understood that and took the measure to "remove" her daughter from herself to do what she felt had to be done.

Mel is ruthless in her own right, only she does it in a catch more flies with honey and making connections sort of way. She proves that you can get the outcome you want without raising your fists or even hurting someone else.

1:16 Love how it depicted Mel at her most vulnerable. No matter how much she pretends it’s behind her, the truth is that her banishment from her own mom hurt and scarred her on an emotional level.

Man, the voice acting in this scene, ESPECIALLY from Mel's side is incredible.

Anyone notice how Ambessa is gentle with Mel? You’d think a hardcore war monger would violently react to her daughter slapping something out of her hand and raising her voice but ambessa just lightly scolded her

The guards little hmph at 0:13 is a really nice detail to show his respect for Mel. He probably thought of her as weak seeing as he worked for Mel's mom, who he probably sees as strong. He's proven wrong when Mel "overpowers" her mom.

Ambessa is such an interesting character -- you can see a ruthlessness in her that will ultimately extract unforgivable deeds, but you can also see that for however she may deceive, she's NEVER lying about wanting to protect her family. A warlord and conqueror will see a traitor in every shadow, and her children are an even greater target than she is. They present this character with the understanding that even her selfish motives are still ultimately toward protecting the only family she has left.

I guess she got the war she wanted . at the cost of her own daughter

In the end, Mel's mom offered to give her back everything she wanted for years and Mel still chose Jayce and Piltover above her family. She's the Prince Zuko of this show.

I think it's telling that in over a decade, Ambessa never once thought to tell her daughter why she'd effectively kicked her out.

I love how Mel is all like "out of my house and go back to your own home mom!"

And Ambessa's like "watch it, you ain't too old to get that ass whooped girl."

people talk a lot about the animation (and it's fantastic, don't get me wrong), but I find it interesting how throughout the dialogue Mel uses a lot of "you/your" phrases where Ambessa uses "we/us/our". it highlights how Mel feels like she isn't a part of the Medarda family anymore while her mother does. one could argue that Ambessa is trying to manipulate Mel into siding with her but her statements seem far too genuine for that. She admits to weakness, and that's not something you often see in someone obsessed with power.

I love these kind of dialogues about politics and family drama. Reminds me of Game of Thrones when it was at its peak.
