2024 Honda CR-V review: Hybrid and turbo versions of new family SUV accept Toyota RAV4's challenge

The 2024 Honda CR-V mid-size SUV is finally here, and it's looking to shake-up the Mid-size SUV segment. Now, that's easier said than done thanks to the dominance of the Toyota RAV4, but it has a good chance with the addition of a hybrid powertrain.

As per its previous generation, the CR-V is also available with a turbo-petrol engine, but the attention is firmly on its petrol-electric counterpart, which has its work cut out for it against the all-conquering RAV4 Hybrid.

But, of course, there's more to the new-generation CR-V story than just what's under the bonnet. In this expert review, CarsGuide Managing Editor Tim Nicholson puts the family SUV through its paces at its Australian media launch, to find out if it really has takes to make buyers think twice about buying a RAV4. If it's to do so, it better be really good.

Is there any reason why hybrid HEV AWD is not available in Australia?

Not sure about no spare tyre in the hybrid, I’d definitely want one in there

At 4.29 mark that side angle shot with the red exterior color reminds me a bit of honda jazz styling

It looks like a Volvo X-90 mixed with a Skoda Kodiaq and a Mazda CX-5 😂

No 360 camera is most disappointing at this price point
And no options for window shades!

I bought the RS a month ago - very impressive and a great car to drive. It's big!

The bad news is according to 1.5 Turbo owners, oil dilution and leak problem is not yet fixed :(

No AWD on Hybrid is a massive let down. Have Honda learnt nothing from Toyota's success.Very nice other than that and the no proper spare tyre on Hybrid.

@CarsGuide do you know why Australia didn’t get the 360 degree camera, cooled front seats, heated steering wheel and electronic gear shifter like they have in the RS e:HEV overseas? Is this coming in a facelift version?

there's something about the front grille makes the car seem like the perspective is off and I'm looking at a zoomed in toy car.. it's hard to explain

Does anyone have steering rack problem in Generation 5th?
This issue is prevalent in Malaysia market. Honda is offering extra warranty for steering rack

This hybrid takes 10 seconds to get from 0-100 and he says there's enough to get up and go???

Honda has stepped up & caught up with the field again, but that's it, they have not exceeded the field convincingly to justify their massively inflated prices for the new CR-V compared to the competition?.

It’s now late March 2024 and I have not seen even one new CRV on the road, parked, in a car park etc. I’ve seen a few new HRV and ZRVs . They are desperate to sell them, offering all sorts of incentives. Is it the fact that they’re not Japanese built( built in Thailand) contributing to this, I’m not sure. They’re very successful outside Australia. The reviews are all favourable. If Honda don’t sell many of these, particularly the hybrid, they won’t survive in Australia any longer perhaps.

The wheel size of this new CRV HEV model is 19 inch, not 17 inch.

Can someone please clarify if the hybrid is AWD? 2 electric motors- one front one rear would suggest it is but No one is calling it AWD?

It fails the rear passenger crash test by IIHS. Seat belt buckle comes off.

I personally prefer Honda over Toyota, but Honda is way off on their pricing versus features in their vehicles. Let’s compare the CRV with the RAV4. I can buy a Toyota RAV4 XSE or Limited anywhere from $42, 000-$44, 000.. With that I get a level three technology package that includes a full panoramic sunroof, 360° camera, much larger infotainment center, wireless, Apple CarPlay, a digital rearview mirror, and better mpg!

I thought Honda was just playing catch-up with the competition, so I waited and waited. And now we see the redesign of the Honda Accord. What were they thinking? That thing is just straight up ugly! Also, the first fully electric vehicle coming out, called the Honda prologue. But you didn’t know that they actually collaborated with Chevy to make that vehicle. Exact same base and construction as the new electrified equinox. No thanks!
