The Epic of Serina | Part I

What would happen if you left canaries alone on a world to evolve for hundreds of millions of years? This is a breakdown of Dylan Bajda’s speculative evolution epic ‘Serina.’
---

Imagine what could happen if you left a type of bird — for example… finches — alone on a lush planet without predators for hundreds of millions of years. What kinds of incredible forms might evolve? If you consider that mammals grew from a few rodent-like species into elephants, whales, horses, bats, and primates in a much shorter period after the extinction of dinosaurs — you’ll start to realize just how incredible things might get.

This concept is the idea behind one of the most detailed speculative biology projects ever created; Serina, the World of Birds. This epic multi-million year journey was created by Dylan Bajda, an incredible artist and writer.

So, let’s get started at the very beginning of the saga, with the introduction of life on the moon of Serina.

The World of Serina 0:00
The Hypostecene: 0 - 10 mil yrs 1:02
The Tempuscene: 11 - 50 mil yrs 2:56
The Cryocene: 50 - 75 mil yrs 7:23
Outro 11:18

I’m extremely happy people are starting to get into the fascinating concept of Speculative and Convergent Evolution! Especially the Serina series that I’ve known for a year now!

It's crazy to see how birds who are the descendants of dinosaurs and are avian dinosaurs themselves have the capacity to actually "re-evolve" back to their former "dinosaur-selves" when given the chance and the niches they once filled back then.

This is still being updated, too. Entries are being added not only to the last period, the Ultmocene, but occasionally into other periods as well, helping flesh them out.

I would love to see this with other creatures too. What would a world of purely cattle evolve into after tens of millions of years left alone? Or how about tortoises and turtles? Or elephants? The possibilities are so fascinating.

As a breeder of canaries I find this very fascinating. In recent decades, very bizarre canary breeds have been created through artificial selection such as the gibber italicus and giboso espagnol. I can see what tens of millions of years of natural sexual selection can do. Too bad it's a thought experiment that we could never do in real life, but that doesn't make it any less exciting.

See why can’t we get documentaries based off of these kinds of speculations, they are so fun and interesting! Really makes the mind wander

Now we just wait for him to talk about the saga of the gravediggers, because that will be awesome

I once stumbled upon the claim, marsupials could never evolve into something like whales. I highly doubt that since I'm convinced evolution always finds a way. I would love to see a concept like this

Some dinosaurs in the distant past: Let's evolve into birds!
Birds on the Serina in a distant future: OK it's rewind time!

Speculative mammal evolution: *Evolves into strange specialized animals with an uncanny familiarity to modern day animals*
Speculative bird evolution: *Evolves into more birds*

Serina has been one my favorite things to follow when I'm on my breaks at work - the level of thought put into the evolution and speciation of so many lines of life forms is staggering, plus Bajda's art is simply beautiful.

Just found your channel yesterday and I’ve already binged all your videos. Eager to see the growth of your channel, love your work! Thank God I found that random video about All Tomorrow’s (which I had never even heard of in my 23 years on this rock) that led me here.
