A new chapter in the epic story of Serina, which will change the moon forever. A breakdown of Dylan Bajda’s speculative biology project ‘Serina.’
---

This video is a new chapter in my long-running series exploring the incredible speculative evolution project of Serina, the world of birds. Serina was created by Dylan Bajda — a terrific artist and worldbuilder — and many exciting developments have occurred since we last explored his creation.

You may remember the fascinating premise of the Serina project: an unknown force leaves a colony of finches on the moon of Serina, along with a few other plant and animal species to serve as their food supply. The project imagines the amazing lifeforms that evolve from these humble beginnings over millions of years — creatures that I’ve explored in past videos.

For this entry into the archive, we’ll chronicle the next era in this evolutionary epic, and witness the rise and fall of countless species as the world of Serina continues to change…

I like how this is not just speculative evolution anymore, it’s also diving into speculative mythology.

this went from an interesting story about evolution
to a beautiful story about civilisation.

This whole story should be an animated series, and I would pay to watch.

The story of the last woodcrafter is sad. Imagine being the last of your species. Knowing all their culture and uniqueness dies with you. At least the grave diggers keep their memory alive.

never thought i'd cry over a speculative biology project about birds

I thought this series was all wrapped up and finished!
Then out of nowhere it just came back and said "But I'm not done yet!"
A surprise to be sure, but wholly welcome one!

This was absolutely amazing! Also, my bet is that the chatterers, or some relatives of their are going to be the "air" leg of the triangle of the Daydreamer mythos.

The last woodcrafter story was so beautiful, I remember watching it when you had just released part 3 and it was the hardest I had cried in a while. The beauty of the cycle of life and the crushing reality that we're all going to die someday but we can still make a difference and affect other people's lives for the better. Also the "I love you, Bird." part is so beautiful, a meaningless collection of noises uttered and repeated by the Babblejay's descendants for generations. Even with the last woodcrafter's death their love for life is able to be repeated over and over and even if it has no meaning it is that which we give meaning that makes us truly alive. Thank you for posting these videos and showing this amazing epic and thank Dylan Bajda for this tragic but beautiful story.

I was legitimately just talking about this to my science teacher and how she should check this out.

The Ocean Age saga is where this project could have lost me, but instead made me incredibly emotionally invested in the sapient birds and their triumphs and tragedies. Wondering if a friend who does sewing work might be able to knock out a little Daydreamer plush for me, now...

Developing civilizations are great and all, but props to the ant colonies that turned into great predators. Insects are kinda underrated in many speculative evolution projects.

I know that in the story the world of Serina is slowly cooling and that life will eventually die out there. But I'm hoping there's still time for at least one of Serina's species to develop into a spacefaring civilization before that happens.

the Nop are so hilariously nubby, the artist really nailed the look of how morphed and dependent animals that become domesticated can get

Those words "I love you Bird" went through my heart for some reason, I actually cried ! and that mysterious presents at the end of the woodcrafters life, that's the being who seeded life on Serina. ''The Humans''. WOW, truly an epic story!

This is probably one of the best and most creative speculative evolution story’s. The only thing i would change is the ending.

Glad to see Serina has bounced back!
The rabbit-deer-fish vs. land penguin conflict made me sad.

I was so disappointed thinking that part 3 would be a vague conclusion to this epic trilogy, and yet here we are at the forth instalment! This part of the series was incredibly pleasing to watch, how Serina started as a speculative biology project has now started to blend into a world building project, the dawn of gravediggers and woodcrafters to the Ocean era.. We have watched the life of Serina evolve and flourish as if they were, in-fact real. Rest in Peace the final wood crafter, and may your words forever echo among the "Bird" 's descendants and the gravediggers..

That last woodcrafter's tale was wholesome asf, and honestly, this masterpiece deserves a freaking animated series

Honestly the most surprising thing about Serina is how oddly wholesome the saga of the Ultimocene sophonts has been in spite of all sorts of things that wouldn't be out of place in a horror dystopia. A war between sapient predator and sapient prey, a genocide of supremacist herbivores against innocent carnivores, an intelligent marine predator farming their own relatives as livestock and a race of what are basically bird orca nazis, and yet with each twist there's a surprisingly optimistic resolution.
