Homemade compost in pallet enclosures

During summer months, because we usually have sufficient materials, it's possible to make compost quickly, simply and cheaply.
Each enclosure is four pallets and eight pieces of wire, that is all.
Add about three quarters green by volume, one quarter brown.
Line your heaps to retain moisture and warmth.

I also have have a pallet compost system thanks to your suggestion. It's a very good size to ensure there is enough heft for a hot pile.

For my"cold" piles, I start with a sizeable rotting log with food scraps tucked beside it. Cover the sides with leaves or sticks or chips, and the pill bugs turn scraps into castings really fast. Bonus points, put it Uphill of your food crop and watering the log will fertilize your food while the soil health improves.

I use this ver same setup and my finish compost is amazing. I don’t use the cardboard sides but I’m going to the next time I turn and open a bay. Love all his work. Charles, you are a blessing to me. Thank you!

I’ve got three mainly fine wood chip and pruning compost bins 1.5m2 at 65C . I compress all my weed collections down in several Dalek bins then add them to central part of the bins . Placing coffee grounds, grass comfrey and wood chip around and underneath.

Why shouldn't air come through the compost, Charles? one of my compost had quite a lot of air in it. I didn't know, sorry.

I got chickens and use hemp in the enclosure sometimes when i clean their enclosure i put some on the compost but my question is: Hemp count as dry material right? But does this change when it gets wet?

Hi beginner composter here! Do you have to always turn your compost? And does it matter if the sides and top arent covered? The problem I find is I live in wales with lots and lots of rain! So find my compost is sodden all the time, will this effect it?

Ants have made a nest in my allotment compost bins. I decided not to disturb them so just add to the heap .
