I like the canon that God and his assistant creates something to solve a problem at some point in time and they send it to an earlier point in time so that they can eventually make it to that initial problem. Time travel logic at work, here.

The fictional Sherlock Holmes sometimes utilized a tracking dog named Toby for some of his cases. Toby was a mix of terrier, some bloodhound and some other breeds and was prized for great tracking ability. The stories came out before police K9 departments were adopted.
