British Army's future infantry leaders prepare for huge test

Soldiers from the British Army's Union Division have taken part in a military training exercise to learn the necessary skills to become future leaders and attend promotional courses held in Brecon.

The Section Commander and Platoon Sergeants' Battle courses are both held in the Welsh countryside and it is where all infanteers must go to prove they have the qualities to lead troops on operations.

Due to Brecon's harsh landscape, combined with some of the UK's worst weather, it's become a place most troops revere, with a daunting reputation – hence the 'Brecon myth'.

A man's got to do what a man's go to do! It was true when we were playing ''cowboys and Indians'' back in the day.
It remains so to this day, blood sweat and tears, is what makes a good soldier. Training hard = easier operations!

I did 20years as a Territorial, I trained with people in Germany America Gibraltar Cyprus Canada Romania Holland. I can tell you that it's not easy. Foreign troops like our discipline and training. Yes I've got a few physical problems but I wouldn't have missed it. To my Regular friends of which I have many, you've been there and done it Respect 🙏. The point I'm trying to make is, the friends you make are forever. We are/were to serve and protect our country. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦

Being Welsh myself I wish I had training. The town center really is rough.

I remember that place. It was so wet and waterlogged the frogs got confused between what was a pond and what was just very wet boggy grass and spawned their eggs out on the grass.

I do believe they will do well. The land in Brecon is tough and gruelling but if you have the drive and determination you will finish!

Not sure if they're doing it already, but I'd add to that training drone awareness. With open ground like that, if a drone spots you (like in Ukraine) then the longer it stays in the air, the sooner you'll be dead from precise arty fire.

I hope future soldiers have anti drone equipment available to them.

I did this way back in 1994 most of the DS instructors were Falkland veterans. I had already served operationally in Desert Storm, Northern Ireland and Bosnia so was well prepared for my SCBC Brecon. The toughest part was the Fan Dance near the end. But overall found the course not as difficult as some had said back at the regiment. I still have the SCO Brecon sweater as a momento for putting up with this place 😁😁😁😁

Be under no illusions both SCBC & PSBC are honking courses theres no myth surrounding being constantly cold, wet, tired, knackered & miserable

These dudes don't want to be Infantryman, they are doing it for the promotion. It's a big difference when you want to be a grunt. I wanted to be an infantryman, and I knew guys who looked forward to going to war as a grunt. It's a whole other mindset when you want to do it.

Presumably sorting the real fighters from the diversity managers?

Otterburn - horrible.
Catterick - horrible.
Sennybridge - horrible.
Brecon - horrible.
Larkhill - OK...which is probably the infantry don't use it.

SCBC or PSBC ‘need to be done’ so you can bore impressionable younger soldiers forever. Cheers dits.

Enjoy the course lads, once you’ve soldiered in cold, wet, muddy Brecon, you know you’re ready for leadership.
