PM Nikol Pashinyan Calls for a Positive Future at the UN General Assembly in NYC

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his wife, Anna Hakobyan, are in the United States on a working visit. During their time in New York, Pashinyan attended the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Pashinyan delivered a speech at the Future Summit, sharing his vision for a better world.

In his speech, Pashinyan emphasized the importance of shaping the future, stressing how the decisions made today will impact tomorrow. Reflecting on his own experience as Armenia’s Prime Minister, he noted that his party’s election slogan, "There is a future," guided his leadership. He stressed that while we cannot change the past, the future is still within our control.

Pashinyan’s speech was centered on the idea that building a better future requires positive thinking. He acknowledged that many global challenges, such as conflict, climate change, and human rights issues, have made it difficult for world leaders to focus on optimism. He pointed out that international platforms, like the UN, often become places where leaders air grievances and engage in blame rather than offering hopeful solutions.

However, Pashinyan urged his fellow leaders to change this approach. He argued that positive narratives are essential for creating a better future, even if those narratives do not seem possible at the moment. He stressed, “The most important thing we can do for the future is to create positive narratives and focus on the possibilities of creating the foundations for them.”

The Prime Minister’s message was clear: while it is easy to see the negative aspects of the world today, it is much harder—but more important—to focus on the good and the potential for positive change.

Unlike his previous speeches at the UN, where he often lists conflicts and tensions in the region, this time Pashinyan chose to focus on opportunities. He deliberately avoided criticizing neighboring countries and instead concentrated on what can be done to build peace and cooperation.

In this context, he referenced the phrase, “In the beginning was the Word,” suggesting that change begins with positive words and ideas. He called on the global community to take this first step by embracing the belief that a better future is possible.

Pashinyan also emphasized the need for international cooperation in addressing some of the most pressing issues of the day, such as peace, security, climate change, and artificial intelligence. He reminded the audience that while these challenges are daunting, they also present opportunities for innovation and progress if approached with optimism and collaboration.
