Показать описание
Our latest student lecture features the first lecture in the second term (1st Year) introductory course on Linear Algebra from leading Oxford Mathematician James Maynard.

We are making these lectures available to give an insight in to the student experience and how we teach. All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.

I’m here only because I want to pretend like I’m smart and I understand this.

Well, the true math is, one year at Oxford can be actually two years: the first and the last.

Plot Twist: the professor himself doesn't know what was he talking about too

20 years old. Flunked math all high school.
GOT seriously involved in learning math.
Turns out it's really not as hard as you'd imagine. It's just a lot of logical thinking and less just remembering formulas and stuff.
Knowing that would've really helped me earlier in life.

This time 45 years ago I was a maths student, and lectures were delivered in this way, but with blackboards. Nowadays, it's difficult to understand why the lecture material is not posted online, thus leaving the lecturer free to give explanations where necessary and to do problems. Most students can't listen, write and learn at the same time. Lecture time is time wasted that could be more valuably spent actually learning.
