Power of Neutron Stars! COSMOS in a minute #14

A neutron star is such a dense object, that even a teaspoonful of its material, would weigh more than all the humans on Earth combined. These exotic objects are born from the cataclysmic death of massive stars. They are no larger than a small city and pack a mass up to twice that of our Sun. Neutron stars are also the fastest spinners known in the universe. Some neutron stars, called mini-second pulsars, can rotate 700 times per second. Despite their smooth appearance from a distance, they have 'mountains' on their surfaces. But these so-called mountains are mere centimeters tall due to the extreme gravity. However, even these tiny bumps can generate powerful gravitational waves that ripple through spacetime. These incredible objects remind us that the universe is endlessly complex and wondrous, with much left to discover.

It's the Starquakes that happen on neutron stars that fascinate me the most. There's so much energy contained in a neutron star's mass that tectonic activity can and does still happen. But when a starquake happens the crack only moves mere fractions of a millimetre, and when it does it releases a massive burst of energy that blasts out into space that can literally travel light years before calming down.

For those who are interested in reading amazing hard Sci-Fi about this subject should definitely check out Dragon's Egg by Robert L Forward. Humans discover intelligent life on a neutron star called Dragon's Egg. They're called the "Cheela" and they're the size of sesame seeds, and due to the gravity we see them evolve far quicker -- an hour to us spans months to them.

Definitely one of the finest Sci-Fi stories ever written.

I found one of these in a beautiful little game called Space Engine. A game that allows you to explore both the known and unknown parts of the universe.
Yea, these things can literally spin 700 spins per second in real time.
It was almost unreal to witness how fast it was spinning.
Neutron stars are definitively some of the more powerful objects in the universe.
