Sometimes people are having a hard time painting. I am always short on time too, being someone who has a full-time job and 3 small kids. I am constantly juggling. Here is a small tip that might be able to help you if you are struggling to find more time to paint. =)

Don't give yourself the pressure to finish a painting in one sitting. What other tips do you have to find time to paint? =)

Hi Eric, Im glad you mentioned to us that taking a break now and then helps to see our work differantly. at times even finding mistakes we dident notice before. My art teacher also told us to once in awhile, look at our work in a mirror! by seeing it in reverce really brings the good the bad and the ugly up front ! like falty perspective, color imbalence, and subject placement. and if you find you hate your drawing, you can get satisfaction by taping it to the interstate freeway, and watching 4ooo cars and trucks run over it....Did you ever find that if you enjoy painting, the time seems to just fly by!!!

I also have a day job but only one child. I art in the evenings after my son has gone to bed by 8:00pm. I don't art every evening but when I do I might watch a DVD or listen to an audiobook. I sometimes put on CDs of birds, whales or weather. I'm going to art this evening. Looking forward to it.

When I'm pressed for time, sometimes I'll sketch on the go, when I'm on the train or while waiting for a work meeting to start. It's not perfect, but daily practice is one of the number one things that helps you improve your skills.

For me its a mental thing and that comes and goes - but I do like the way that you are open to discuss these issues - Thanks Eric

Eric, i appreciate what you do. It’s very difficult at your time of life to actually have time for the things you WANT to do. I’m lucky I’m older ( or unlucky) so I now have the time . It’s a trade off. Young and busy, or old and lots of time. 🎨. From Tallahassee.

Great tip Eric... as I’m progressing, I’m finding it better to paint in sessions. I love leaving a wash overnight. Firstly, it dries well and, as you say, I get fresh eyes on it but the real plus is I wake up excited and enthusiastic to take the next steps on the piece - never knowing how it’s going to turn out 😳😀 ... great fun! After many years chronically disabled with MS, this has added so much to my life... beyond words

Same for me Eric. I have never watched any of the shows that you mentioned. I refuse to get sucked into watching series. I do love movies though. Well, good ones at least. I have always said to people who say, "I don't have time." "We all have the same time. 24 hours in a day. How we chose to use our time. That is what makes the difference."

Your videos are the BEST!!! You are always my first go-to for any questions I have about watercolor painting. Hands-down, the very best! Really appreciate your humility, honesty, soulfulness of being a watercolorist. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts and talents - and thank your wife and family for sharing your time. Your videos and you are such a blessing. Being an introvert myself, it's not hard to imagine the energy these draw from you. Thank you so, so much!

I think that one suggestion you had in another video—perhaps the one about your studio—was that its important to have a dedicated space to paint. That saves setup time and provides more time to paint.

You’re right about binge watching taking up time. I fasted from Netflix in Jan and started painting daily instead. And wow, my skills improved so much. Now I am wary of starting any Netflix series. A movie or two with mt family but then I don’t binge watch a series anymore and dedicate more time to art. It is way more satisfying.

Wonderful tips! I’m looking forward to your loose watercolor video. As a beginner I tend to be super anxious about what I’m doing and so afraid to let watercolor do what watercolor is supposed to do and then I’m less happy with my results because my paintings look too stiff and fussy and don’t have the loose, washy qualities that I love. 🙄. I’ve gotta learn to loosen up (and not just with watercolor) 😄

Ooh. Loose painting - perfect timing! I am trying so hard to get loose and just not getting it so will be watching, guaranteed. Thanks for your wisdom
