In this video I show you how I removed a cylinder head from a 2.3L SOHC Vtec Accord engine. There are several ways to do this, and you can take different steps at different times, but this is the way I did it.

One of the better videos I've seen on this engine. Please keep up the good work!

Don't try pulling the head off in one fell swoop. There's studs on the intake side too. Remove the intake manifold bracket bolt from underneath so you can slide the intake manifold back and clear the studs. If you can find some M8-1.25 x 30mm JIS (12mm head) 10.9 flange bolts, you can use those instead as long as you use them with two star washers and one regular washer as shown below:

[M8-1.25 x 30mm JIS bolt] --> [star washer] --> [regular washer] --> [star washer] --> [intake or exhaust manifold]

21 Ft-Lbs. on the intake and exhaust side. Don't over-torque, and don't do this without all three washers or the bolts will bottom out in the head before clamping anything. A little loc-tite on the threads probably wouldn't hurt either.

Great Video, seeing you go through all that trouble, makes it clear how hard the head is to be removed with the intake intack, would not want to have to do that reinstall, sence the timing belt and water pump will come into play, I'd probably just pull the engine and do all the work the engine will probably need on a engine stand

Thanks for the video. I’m in the process removing the cylinder head also to perform piston re-ring. #2 has excessive blow by and low compression. Ordered a re-ring kit, should keep me busy for a while. It’s a low budget build up and probably be flipping the Accord or keep her 🤔 She’s been a great ride commuting to work 132 miles RT Mon-Fri...Cheaper to keep her 👍

great vid, Blake. Can now delete those other vid describing the process after its out which are worthless seeing the problems you encountered that would not have been evident in the other non-step by step vids. Thanks, my back is hurting seeing you hunched over that thing.

Everything to the middle of the video looks like pretty good info. But that wiring connector under the v-tec solenoid is not the "coolant temp sensor" it is "VVT (variable valve timing) oil pressure sensor" just thought of give you heads up in case you need to replace it as it does nothing for coolant temp but a lot for valve timing if your v- tec is screwing up.

I tried doing this and realized that I was missing one of these bolts and come to find out it has broke off so do you know how to remove the broken bolt to replace this cylinder head

Next time remove the exhaust manifold completely, and remove bolts that hold intake manifold, so that intake can be left in place except for those bolts that support the intake to the block. Yes these bolts are hard to get to. Also this would be a good time to change those o-rings under the rocker arm assembly. Then too, you will probably half to take tension off of timing belt before you can install it again. Might even be time to replace the belt or belt's now that it's apart. Getting the harmonic balancer bolt out, is a chore too. Good luck!

Great video overall. You saved me alot of time in some areas so i appreciate it. Did the removal yesterday....my back is killing me lol. (I ended up removing the Cam Sprocket bolt and rigged it to a stick to keep it up in almost the same position (with wire)...so i didnt have to do all the other stuff with the timing belt..pain to remove the head with the manifold attached but its the only way reasonable....cant imagine how much fun its going to be to install 😣🤣

Great video.

I am in the process of removing the lower intake to replace the lower intake gasket.

My idle control valve was messed up. As I removed the upper intake ( not to bad) and checked my idle valve. It was plugged with leaves! Reason, I was running my Honda without an air filter🙈

So when I bought the gasket, it only came as a kit. So now I'm trying to remove the lower intake and it looks tough!

Looks like I have to lift the car to get to the lower intake bolts on the bottom.

So I was hoping this video would show how to do it. But Great video 👍

Nice job just wingin' it. That's how I roll... Lol, at 16:55, did you go the wrong way at first when attacking those 12 point head bolts? At least it didn't snap off, that could have been nasty.
