So What About The Dark Sinister Side Of Epping Forest?
Murder, Ghosts, Highwayman And Lots Of Ancient History
From Legendary Dick Turpin To Recent Gruesome Murders - Epping Forest has a long ancient history, this video covers Epping's interesting past and the dark tales associated with the forest.
Legendary highwayman Mr Dick Turpin found refuge here in the forest in the 18th century.
Epping Forest was one of his favourite stomping grounds where he targeted the carriages of wealthy people.
“Stand and Deliver”, he used to shout
Strangely, highwaymen seem to carry a romantic, even heroic image. if the stories are true, Turpin was actually a ruthless killer, robber and terrorist. Perhaps the most notorious, and paradoxically the most romantic, highwayman of all, Dick Turpin has certainly left his mark in the English history books and has etched his way into the legends that exist here in Epping forest.
Turpin was born in Hempstead in 1705, and at some point in his life, he was involved in the very violent Gregory Gang. When he eventually left the gang, he became a highwayman. His favourite area in the forest was that of Loughton Camp. It is believed that Turpin killed at least one man in Epping Forest.
