Dark tales from Victorian London's River Thames (19th Century River Rogues)

preview_player
Показать описание
In the darkness and fog of Victorian London criminals looted ships and evaded the police for much of the 18th and early 19th Century, but the creation of a marine police force saved merchants money and lives too. In this eyewitness account of Victorian policing on the River Thames, discover some of the methods used by rogues of London's riverine underworld to trick captains and loot valuables from ships; find out what conditions were like in a cell at Wapping police station for crooks that were caught; and learn about some of the unusual ways police went about their patrols, where even a false word could land you in prison.

My Father, a Master Lighterman, told me that if a body was found in the River, you got two shillings if you towed it to one side if the River, and two shillings and sixpence if you towed it to the other bank. I cant remember which side paid what though

I got a bit of a surprise when the RRS Discovery was mentioned! I'm from Dundee, the new home of this ship which was built here when our docks had shipbuilding facilities. It was interesting to hear about "Arctic Jack" being in the force and how the ship was used after its sojourn to colder climes! ❤

Had occasion to view the Metropolitan Police list of officers who had died on active duty from Victorian times to the present. The amount who died in the docks, after 'falling in the water at night' was surprising, to say the least.

I thoroughly enjoy these productions having spent considerable time on both the tidal and non-tidal Thames back in the 70s and owning a series of boats over succeeding decades.... working with 'Waterman', wonderful characters, learning the natural laws of the river, how to navigate the twisting course of the river through a dark night, how to decide whether it's safe to attempt a transit of a particular bridge at a particular state of the tide, is there enough depth ? Is there enough headroom to pass under ? How Not to attempt to lift a body from the water after its soaking over a lengthy period... and that to bring the body to the Surrey shore at Richmond will get you an award of only one pound whereas if we'd tied up on the Middlesex shore we'd have earned one pound ten shillings... so a young policeman told me.. we weren't tempted to cast off and relocate to the opposite shore.

My Favourite character was Arctic Jack, I wonder if he was a Del Boy from Victorian Times? (only teasing), good vlog as per usual, this is Paul in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England
