I'm not entirely sure what the "fake" units are for?

The ship is a unit? Like uhm a gunship type unit or a mission to kill it?

Im pretty sure that ships at 0:20 are flying "away" from the screen. There are thrusters on the pointy parts of UFO ships, so the big one is most likely having thruster on the back (side that is facing us) aswell.
