Always cool to see the changes and evolution in gear and systems. Don't know about you, but looking back sometimes it's like, "Whoa, I can't believe I used to actually use that old thing, haha".

Thanks for sharing Brother. I know you're putting this gear to use in the field and your insight is appreciated.

Great advice/thoughts. We've been watching you do this consistently for several years now, and your perspective is definitely valued and appreciated.

Great discussion Crocket, so many pros and cons indeed. Another paradigm I've learned: "Redundancy is the root of all bad backs and all heavy packs."

I left the ground for a hammock. It's been a couple of years. And I have not looked back.
The main reason was my back problems. After two surgeries I had to make a change. I also picked up a Ohm 2.0 backpack. I had a Kelty. The ULA is super light and comfortable. Makes the hiking much more enjoyable. And considerably less painful. Happy Pappy Day sir.

I've been able to watch some of your gear changes. Many of them have inspired me. I started out with cheap, relatively heavy gear. Over the years I've upgraded and laugh at some of the things I hauled into the mountains. I guess we do things out of necessity just so we can participate. I'm fortunate to have a wife who has let me spend significant money on some very nice gear. My advice to those who want to get into the outdoors on a budget. Be creative and resourceful with your gear. Be safe and spend where needed. However, don't go buy everything in sight. Over time you will start to realize what works for you and your system. System evolution is half the fun of backpacking!

I always enjoy these kinds of videos.  Your changes make a lot of sense to me.   I'll be watching for that tarp vs. tent video.

You always see people post videos once they get their packs/gear all setup but they never do updates and show changes in gear/philosophy.  Thanks for showing the changes you have made to your setup.

For your paracord color code, you could use different colors of heat shrink tubing on each end of the paracord. Black for 20 ft., yellow for 6 foot, or what ever your choices are.

I've recently done the same with my gear. I changed my Katadyn Hiker Pro to a Sawyer Squeeze. Also, I've went from tent hammock which shaved a good bit of weight for me. I love these type of vids.

I took a Katadyn with me on a backpacking trip a few weeks ago.  It did great as long as the water was clean.  Got into some dirty water, and it gummed up.  My fault.  A buddy of mine brought along a Sawyer two bag gravity system.  Very impressive!  I may invest in that one, since I need more water when my kids come along.  Always a learning experience getting out.  Love it!  Hopefully heading out again in the fall when the cool weather returns.  Good stuff Crocket.  Thanks.

love the philosophy, not just at one moment, but how it's changed over time, given your individual situation. Interesting idea about the smaller water bottles, too. Wow, huge weight difference.

Yep, I've changed up my water system too. The intense heat this summer is crazy hot this year, well, it always is here in Sonora...

I love my Hiker Pro. I normally carry a 3L bladder. Gatorade bottles work well - you get to drink it be fore you fill it with water. I hear bankline stretches less than paracord. I just got a Klymit Insulated Static V pad: warm comfortable, light, but slides around alot. I am a tent man but want to try tarps soon.  Short & to the point as always Crocket - excellent video!

Very timely, just finished packing for a trip and funny to see what I left out : ) I hear ya on cleaning water bladders, although I'm bringing mine this go around. (will be doing 28.5 miles) Will try to show this nifty set up I have you may dig.
No tent either OR ground pad, going hammock and tarp again. Good stuff buddy!
