Every year I make several gear changes in my continual quest for lighter and/or more functional equipment. In this video I share six things that I changed in 2022.

Try a Nylofume pack liner bag (LiteSmith). They are durable (I’ve got over 1000 miles on mine) and you should realize another 1-2 oz savings over your compactor bag.

Also, I fluff mine, capture air inside, and gather the end in my fist. Then I use the index finger of my opposite hand to make an opening through my fist, place the valve from my sleeping pad in it, and hug the bag, pushing the air into the pad. This saves me from having to use my mouth to inflate the pad, which can transfer moisture inside the pad, allowing mold to grow. No need to carry a noisy pad inflator pump.

Don’t forget to update your webpage with the changes from the video.

Jon, a few comments. Agree with the liner. Did the AT with a Hefty compactor bag, and did not use a pack cover (this saved about 1 oz). Rain Jacket - on the AT I had a Helium from Outdoor Research (it might have been a Helium II). Anyway, in my opinion, unless it is very cold, the rain jacket does not really matter. It may keep you dry from rain, but then you sweat and get wet from the inside. Otherwise you get wet from the rain. Either way you are wet. The important question is "what keeps you warm." Finally, my Polycro footprint lasted two days on the PCT. Yes, it was about 3 oz. lighter than Tyvek, but my Tyvek footprint lasted the entire AT and then over 1000 miles on the PCT (once I got it sent to me in Big Bear). Although I disagree with you on a few things, I still will watch (and learn from) your videos as I really appreciate your insights from your hikes. Thank you for your posts and insights. It would be an honor to hike with you someday.

I have not gotten on the trail yet this year, but am fueled up with butane, bought 8 more freeze dried dinners, a folding foam zip pad and some new ALPS trekking poles for half price. I hope to complete the remaining 172 miles of TLT late Sept.

Jon, if you would have hiked the AZT this spring, you would not have had to deal with rain gear. That's the easiest way to lighten your pack. Follow the sun!

So you bought another ring to wear in the wild to remind yourself that you’re married?
