Thierry Henry was asked which player he wished he could have played with during his career. It came down to a choice between Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes. With Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher sat either side of him, which player would Henry go for? Would you prefer in your team in their prime, Gerrard or Scholes? Comment below.

Gerrard wins games Scholes wins leagues

EDIT: When I said this 4 years ago I meant Gerrard can take a game by the scruff of the neck and single handedly win you the game... However Scholes controlled the tempo of all you United games and it isn't a coincidence we won game late coz United wore the opposition and Scholes was key to that so

Again:

Gerrard wins games Scholes wins leagues

Zidane said Scholes was the best, Xavi said Scholes was best midfielder in the world, Viera said Scholes was best he played against, Ronaldo said Scholes was best he played with and there's many more. Scholes was the best

Scholes played the long game. You can't measure his impact in terms of assists and goals alone. He knows how to dictate the pace of play and keep possession, undermining the confidence of the other team. And his long balls are immense. The guy could have been a perfectly capable striker if he wanted to, but Fergie put him in midfield, and he adapted and learned how to enable every other player on his team to do their job better.

Gary's face is brilliant when Henry is bigging up Scholes

It's his opinion and he is a legend of the game. I think he knows better than anyone of us in the comment section. Anyway along with him many legends have said that Paul Scholes was he best player they played against. I'm sure alll of you have heard of when Zidane was asked about how it felt to be the best player in the world and he responded by saying I don't know, you should go ask Paul Scholes.

Look at these peasants arguing who the best midfielder is in England. The best English midfielder is Tom Cleverly.

There's no point listening to Utd or Liverpool fans on which one was best. We all know which player each set of supporters will choose. You need to look at what the legends of the game say because they themselves are the yardstick of what makes a great player. Zidane, Xavi, Petit, Vieira, Henry, Guardiola, Lippi, Keegan, Shearer and more have all gone on record saying they felt Scholes was the best. Christ, even Messi said that whilst training and developing in the Barcelona youth academy, the Barcelona coaching staff used to use Scholes as the example of how to play & create in midfield. Look it up.

Steven Gerrard on his day definitely 1 of the best midfielders in world football but for me Paul scholes was the master, the way he dictates the play, he choses to up the pace of the game or to slow it down, the way he pings passes and not to mention he goals he scored from long range shots or darting runs into the box, of course Gerard did that but for me scholes did it on a more consistent basis

Most importantly, Scholes made every player around him better. He changed the pace of the game. We've seen these three players playing individual games in PL week in week out, Scholes seemed to have a better edge very consistently than the other two, either winning comfortably yet convincingly or rather won tactically. Every time he was on the ball, everyone could see that his creativity epitomized the whole team play, the idea of attacking that he bred into the players around him and he easily dictated the game his own way, pinged the ball SHARPLY to the flanks (you could compare his long-range passing ball was a fraction faster than the other two), always moving forward, his techniques are top notch, a box-to-box player. Leave alone winning individual trophies, he could score whenever he wants to. Even Messi said "he's our teacher at La Masia" where Guardiola must have praised him lots in the dressing room or even coaches before him. Footballing greats in the world said things about Scholes more than Stevie and Frankie although we all have known their excellent qualities, but Scholes is/was far the best. Even the late George Best couldn't hide his frustration when Scholesy suddenly retired from the national team as if he could see things could've done better should England put more advanced roles to the Ginger boy and he said, "England have lost their best player."

It's 2018, anyone?

Have to agree with Henry here Scholes really was a amazing midfielder and one of the key reasons to united's success over the years !! Scoring goals isnt everything hence Scholes Pirlo Xavi these are in a unique tier of midfielders which simply are the best and cant be compared to others

Scholes is a very unique player. He never seems to lose control and never wants to be a standout player. He simply likes to play the game. Playing the game is itself a reward.
Sir Alex Ferguson is the greatest British manager of all time and Scholes was his secret ingredient for success.

I liked Stevie G the most

BUT WHEN XAVI, ZIDANE, HENRY, etc SAY ITS PAUL SCHOLES YOU HAVE TO ADMIT IT FULL-STOP.

We never realised how good Scholes was until he was not playing, because he went about his job in such a quiet unassuming way, he was not notice.

He's right, there was a time when we literally did have the best midfield in the world.

at the age of 34 scholes scored a screamer against barca then later wins the UCL, Gerrard at the age 34 gets sent off after 30 seconds at JUANfield then later guided his team to 6th place with 6-1 lost against Stoke. flew to USA.. anymore comparison?
