This video discusses astrophysics careers and getting involved in astrophysics as an ordinary person.

Careers in astrophysics and/or space research are incredibly satisfying. Generally speaking, degrees in astronomy/physics/astrophysics and a PhD in one of those fields are needed. Most astrophysicists work as professors, but some work as full time researchers at observatories.

I make the point in this video that astrophysics is very competitive. But this shouldn't stop anyone from trying to pursue it! If you love astrophysics and you put in the effort, you will do amazing!

An astrophysics degree is a good choice even if you are not 100% sure you want to be an astrophysicist. The degree will prepare you for anything: computer programming, engineering, data science, medicine, and the military.

It's possible to get involved in this field without getting a PhD! I discuss opportunities for enthusiasts to explore astrophysics as a hobby in this video. My two recommendations for enthusiasts are as follows: 1) Read books, watch documentaries, and watch YouTube videos on astrophysics. 2) Get involved in your community by contacting local observatories/planetariums and attending outreach events from physics faculty at nearby observatories.

Astronomy and astrophysics are incredible fields! There are several ways to get involved whether you want to be a full time professor or just a part time enthusiast. I hope you find wonderful ways to explore this amazing field!

Thanks for the insight. I've derailed myself from finding purpose in life for over 10 years. This was a huge memory jog of what it means to have a purpose you want to die for. Not just what is for you. A dead end job that doesn't propel us into the future. If not then I might as well be a mechanic or carpenter. This ... This reminded me of why I studied math to begin with. Thanks for reminding me of my passion.

In Delhi University around 1964, I had started to learn about a couple of elements of astrophysics and now when I see Aman Kapoor talking these things at the pre-university level, I simply get amazed at his level of knowledge.

I watched the cosmos a few years back, I totally loved it, wanted to explore a lot, never got an opportunity, currently I am an undergraduate from IIT Kanpur, have a fair background in physics, where should I look for real opportunity? If you could please provide some references?

Astrophysics is not just to satisfy curiosity. Many projects involve a tremendous technological advance. We have the first image of a black hole, the detection of gravitational waves or the James Webb telescope. All these projects involve a collaboration of many scientific areas and a large investment. But every technological development has an application for which it is worth investing. Don't get frustrated by it, practically all science in all countries is like this. It does not only happen in astrophysics, it happens even in lines of research with the greatest immediate technological application.

I really wanted a job I loved… then I found out becoming an astrophycist takes around eight to ten years to become. Never mind lol. I’ll find something else to love to do…
