As a New Yorker (born and raised) the woman who said she wished NY was closer go Cali offended me. Like plz stop it.

to be a new yorker, you must be born in NYC or be raised in it, you must stand with your friends, family and neighbors against gentrifiers & love the subway.

New Yorker and 19 years strong I moved when I joined the military 6 years ago. I miss the food. We have the best food hands down. I'm so grateful I grew up in Ny due to all the diversity. I would consider myself a lot more open minded. Harlem/S.I

I'm from NY, moved away when I was 11, then moved back as an adult and it seemed that folks that move to NY are the only ones concerned about what it means to be a New Yorker. No offense. They moved to NY to chase a dream. While native New Yorkers are different. They don't have anything to prove. But I was a bit of both. So I'd say, being a New Yorker is about cultural saturation. And everything that comes with it. I can always tell a New Yorker down here (in GA) because of the rich vocabulary, now matter how low in class or education. And your homeless? Yeah it's a problem, as it is in every city, but in NY, I saw homeless people with super creative signage, or unusual styles (like the guy with all the plastic bags on) or literally singing for their supper. Folks here just hold out their hand. The culture is everywhere and no one can escape it.

I've lived in New York for 22 years. I was raised here. For me, New York is New York. There is no place like it. I remember one time, I was attending uni in New Jersey and I got so sick my freshman year. The minute I stepped off at Penn Station, I felt the city just enveloping me in a warm hug. It's just home for me. Sure, we have our problems here such as high prices and the homeless people, but you can't hurt one of us and not expect someone to come to your aid. New York is family. You hurt one of us, you hurt all of us. The cultural diversity of NY is unmatched by any other city in America. I've visited a few cities outside of the state and the country, but as I said, New York is home.

You’re a real New Yorker when you’re in a different state or country, & say "the city" and expect everyone to know you mean NYC

I'm an ex-NYer, left in my 20s and would never move back. It's a harsh place and I'm too gentle a person to live there. You need to know who you are as a person and move to a place that supports Who You Are.

I've been saying for years it takes 10 uninterupted years living here to get the title New Yorker. Double digits, cuz we don't give that title to just anyone. It takes sacrifice.
