How does the human brain work and how is it different from computers? If you think this is too complex to explain in a few minutes, you will be surprised. In this energetic and insightful talk, neuro-scientist Dr. Henning Beck gives insights into thought processes and tells you how you can create new ideas.

Dr. Henning Beck, neuroscientist and author, supports businesses to use brain-based approaches in order to develop innovative and efficient workflows. He studied biochemistry in Tübingen from 2003 to 2008. After his diploma thesis, he started his research at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research and intensified his work at the Institute of Physiological Chemistry at the University of Ulm. Supported by a PhD scholarship granted by the Hertie Foundation he did his doctorate at the Graduate School of Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience in Tübingen. He expanded his scientific expertise by an International Diploma in Project Management at the University of California, Berkeley in 2013. Until 2014, he worked for start-ups in the San Francisco Bay Area to develop creative workspace designs and advanced communication styles based on neuroscientific principles.

I have been a Software Engineer for 20+ years, in fact I worked in predictive analytics (Deep Learning) for a decade. He is actually right about deep diving into a problem and solution and then walking away to receive inspiration automatically from your mind. This is a common practice for Engineers during design and functional requirements phase of developing an innovative solution.

We don't just learn, we understand and change the way we process information. Im taking that with me.

This is what my mind does automatically. It’s like a pattern recognition machine that finds sees how everything relates and synthesizes it all to produce the big picture. Knowledge and understanding comes out of silence. Keeping Quiet.

I sometimes feel that we humans are in a race to try and understand our brains well enough to save us from ourselves before using those very brains to destroy ourselves.

I just saw this talk in the sidebar and did something I usually don't do.... I opened it and dedicated the time to watch and listen. It was Perfect for what I needed to hear and excellent reference points that I will refer to again and again. Wonderful TED Talk.

10:39 - The core point taken from this talk is to understand the difference between understanding and learning. Once you learn something there is a chance that you can 'unlearn' it later and change it but once you understand something you can't de-understood it. we understand very fast on the spot, we don' t need to do the processing. So deep learning is good but deep understanding is better.

Excellent lecture. I have been researching the mind and the brain lately and it just becomes more and more fascinating. You have added a wonderful way to think about all the other things I am learning at age 72. Never too old to learn. I also was impressed with your last name. :) MIKE BECK

So fascinating and inspiring. I’m studying deep learning and brain, but being too familiar with how machine learning works makes me feel like that’s the way intelligence works as well, which is a great underestimation of our thought.
The advice of relax, getting brain processing and generating ideas, making new connections, and constantly challenge our belief is very helpful.
Really, do not think and work like an machine!
