Sony FX3 | Hands-on Review

Looks can be deceiving with this cinema camera. The Sony FX3 may have the appearance of a mirrorless stills camera, but this camera is mostly video-centric, supporting full-frame 4k capture up to 120fps, all in 10-bit 4:2:2. The FX3 takes a different approach in useability and ergonomics, its compact body allowing you to fit into tight recording spaces. The camera also boasts incredibly fast AF, fantastic low light performance, raw output up to 4K/60p, 5-axis IBIS. and more.

B&H is the only source that mentioned 1.6x longer recording times compared to A7S III. This is huge. I don't understand why no one else mentioned this!

Amazing camera, really impressive specs in such a compact form factor.
The XLR inputs, active cooling system, handle, mounting points, dedicated video buttons, finally Sony made a reliable and powerful compact camera suitable for professional video work.

I hate to be negative at all as I love you guys but there’s a number of incorrect factual information and some missing obvious things to say that I do feel your customers should be aware of.

There was a complete absence of saying that this is an A7S III in a different body. In fact the one and only mention of the A7S III was near the end when you said the FX3 has a 1.6x better battery life the A7S III. Where is this information from? I have no such information and I saw no obvious improvement in the already excellent A7S III.

In fact I looked into it and the power consumption is basically the same. It looks like you guys got the figure from the marketing of the a7siii as they said the new model has a more than 60% better battery life.

It’s not a 10.2 Mp sensor, it’s. 12.1 mp sensor. The 10.2 figure is the 16:9 portion of that sensor used in video. The full sensor is 12.1 which you use for stills yet you say the stills are 10.2mp.

The dynamic range figure stated is not what the camera actually captures which is 13 in slog 3.

There is no autofocus in video for animals. It may show it as an option but it is not supported, only for stills. Trust me I’ve tried. The video autofocus strangely gives you the option of selecting it but it does nothing. Sony have categorically stated there is no video autofocus for animals. I’ve got a petition doing to try and get them to make it happen!! 🙏

There is also no included microphone with the XLR handle which is a shame.

I am mostly just really surprised that you didn’t once mention that this camera is an a7siii in a different body. Your customers with an a7siii need to know this so they don’t go and buy this too or sell theirs thinking this is better. Customers who are confused about which camera to buy know what difference is between the two. The a7siii has the EVF. The FX3 doesn’t but has the XLR handle.

The FX3 is an excellent camera but so is the a7siii. Because they are the same camera! 🤯

Anyway sorry to be negative but I just want people to have full accurate info as it’s a lot of money. I made a long review covering a fair bit and the things I wish they had given it to make it fit into the cinema line properly 😃

I just rented an FX3 this afternoon, and I’ve been up past midnight trying to manually set the aperture, the ISO and the white balance. Are there certain steps I need to take before it will let me set them to my specifications?

Great review - thanks! 1) Does the FX3 flip-out screen dim itself outdoors when hot? 2) is the screen bright enough in full UTAH sun? ; 3) does the FX3 turn off eye focus at 4K60? 4) Is object tracking maintained or disabled because the CPU is struggling? sorry for the questions ...All problems i have had with other SONYs that own.
