The Glassblower's Disease #Anatomy #Biology #Medicine

Due to the constant need to forcefully exhale, glassblowers and jazz musicians can develop exceptionally enlarged cheeks. Excessive pressure on the cheeks causes them to over-expand, potentially leading to loosening of the buccinator muscle, which is one of the muscles of the cheeks. It is primarily involved in actions such as blowing and sucking, and it helps to manage the air pressure inside the mouth. Practicing proper technique and taking regular breaks to rest the muscles can help manage the condition.

Not all jazz musicians play that way. It's "poor form" to do so. The majority of musicians hold their embouchure correctly, which is keeping the facial muscles tight. I have experience in playing jazz as well as symphonic music.

That's why with instruments, we learn to keep our cheeks in and only use our lungs, not mouth

I use to force my lung muscles to blow not cheeks, because if you have this disease your face will look haggard every time even if you sleepwell everyday
