I just started and I'm wondering. You have those big diamond shape boons and all those smaller ones on the right. You can like click on them and they get a little marker? What does that mean? Do I have to chose what I wanna use or what is this for? Are all of the small boon shapes active the same time? I'm pretty confused

I wish someone would just explain what this game is... I when through a bunch of rooms ending in killing a woman with one wing, i saw a mountain where i traveled upwards - then when to a different area, eventually got killed and now i'm back to the very beginning of the game and that one winged woman is back - what is this?
