“Back in my day our music had space” - Maynard James Keenan

His description of Tiktok being 'soundbite narcissistic rabbitholes' is so on point. Not arguing that Tiktok isn't entertaining but that description is just too perfect.

Maynard is a character man. Humble guy. His lyrics, from all 3 bands, helped me through good times and bad times.

I love this Interview. Maynard seems really relaxed and opens up naturally. Kinda rare to find him this comfy. I think Rick should interview Trent Reznor next.

MJK is brilliant. He’s able to channel different energies with his three bands. I also think there are specific things he gets from each band. He’s doing a great job 👏 👏👏

I am so impressed by Maynard's clarity about his art, his goals, his influences, just life in general!
I really wish I had some of that...

Thank you Maynard for doing what you've had to do in order to keep Tool together.

We really have to give a ton of credit to Tool's band members who painstakingly put a tremendous amount of effort into creating the awesome instrumental music that they are known for. As Maynard indicated, they take years to build these big beautiful homes, and then he takes a week to decorate them.

Doubt I’ve seen a better interview with him than this. Outstanding job, Rick.

Pet is one of my favorite songs from Maynard. The Humbling River a very close second. They broke the mold with that guy.

Such a rad interview’ Maynard is such a descriptive person who explains things a way that most people can understand’ the way he explains the process of things just makes a lot of sense

You're so right to point out how Maynard isn't afraid to have space in his melodies. Modern music could benefit greatly if artists would just add texture and space to their music. Now, there are bands out there that do that today, but it's few and far between comparatively.

When I see such people around, it gives me a great feeling that there is still a hope remaining for music, for the good quality music... my generation definitely knows what I'm talking about. Thanks for the interview, that's awesome!

Maynard describes his process so eloquently, which really helps me understand where he’s coming from. I loved the analogy of him being the “interior decorator” on the music. He puts those finishing touches on the musical foundation. He and I are the same age, and we had many of the same musical influences. He’s mentioned being influenced by artists like Siouxsie and the Banshees for his lyrics and vocals. I’ve been listening to them a lot lately, and definitely see how their writing style influenced him. Siouxsie was a major influence on me as a vocalist in the 80’s, so I feel a certain kinship with him on that. I’m a late comer as a fan of Tool, having only really found their music in maybe the last 10 years. I personally feel they will leave a massive imprint on music that will last for many, many decades.

Rick - Great interview. It's the first interview with Maynard that I have seen where he is very relaxed and shares some honest feelings with you. Very cool...
