Why Qatar Airways Will Never Introduce Premium Economy

Premium economy is set to arrive in the Middle East for the first time later this month with Emirates. While the region has been slow on the uptake of this trend, could Emirates’ investment in this new product spur other Middle East airlines to join the party?

Having travelled many times long haul in economy on both Emirates and Qatar I would suggest Emirates is superior in this class because of a vastly better entertainment system (ICE) and superior catering. Business is another story - this time Qatar is the clear winner.

Having flown virgin premium economy, I can see it can be a significant upgrade. But it isn’t always.

I flew economy on Qatar between Paris Cdg and Colombo and back to Cdg on A380 and B777. Food was awful but we managed to get front row seats with infinite legroom on all flights and the amenities kit was better than on most business flights I ever took ! Attendants were most kind and effective, so except for the food it felt like premium economy all right.

I've flown both business and economy on Qatar and I have to say the economy seats aren't very comfortable. The width is less than some U.S. domestic flights I've been on. They will introduce premium seating at some point, don't be fooled. He's right about the soft product though. It is excellent even on economy the FA was running back and forth with drinks.

Re-config the entire 777 fleets from 3-3-3 to 3-4-3 except some 77Ls with just 31-33 seat pitch and no difference of in-flight services, well, compared to other 4-5 stars airlines ‘economy class’ and that’s how he claimed it as a premium economy. Good luck 😂.

That’s the last time I fly with Qatar! If Qatar CEO thinks his economy is superior to others, he must be smoking something very Middle Eastern! I flew both Qatar Suites and Qatar Economy and while Qatar Suites are fantastic, Qatar Economy was just average product at best. Def not on the same level as premium economy on some airlines
