Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes convicted of fraud - BBC News

Elizabeth Holmes, founder of health technology company Theranos, has been convicted of defrauding investors after a landmark trial in California lasting several months.

Prosecutors said Holmes knowingly lied about technology she said could detect diseases with a few drops of blood.

Jurors found Holmes guilty of four charges, including conspiracy to commit fraud against investors and three counts of wire fraud, all of which she denied.

The charges carry a maximum prison term of 20 years each, but Holmes was not taken into custody, with no date confirmed yet for sentencing and a further hearing scheduled next week.

What's really shocking is that the authorities didn't check whether the machines actually worked.
If there isn't a legal requirement there should be one now. One way would be for such companies to have their results of treatments verified by an independent body such as an auditor made up of scientists and medical doctors.

As a person who has a family history of leukemia, I know how important this could've been. But misleading people on false hope and giving fake results. This was a disaster . Thank god for the people who gathered courage to tell the truth

I imagine a lot of journalist or scientist who asked some critical questions were often ridiculed by her and her team before all of this. Much like the culture of Enron where if you ask "why" then you're laughed at and immediately labeled as a party pooper etc. History will repeat itself once people forget about this company.
