Most pop singers aren't altos because pop music is now all about screaming out the high note. When you scream out a high note everyone is like "YEEEAAA". Altos like Tony Braxton can sing a very low note that many people can't hit but as soon as she hits that high note everyone cheers. Why don't we cheer for the low alto notes. REVOLUTION!!! revolution....?

Sad thing is when I was in high school the altos were all treated like lesser beings compared to the sopranos (by both the teacher, and the sopranos.) It was so bad to the point that most of us would strain desperately to try and be sopranos when she would test our singing. I'm so happy that over the years I've learned that an alto voice is just as beautiful as soprano.

I'm an alto singer and it's so amazing how I can sing variety songs both in male and female keys. That is awesome.

This was really useful. I am definitely an alto and this explains why trying to cover pop songs can be difficult without changing the key to something more suitable

"Not so much about that you can hit the higher notes.. but they can really sing the low notes and A LOT OF WOMEN CAN'T DO THAT" - Woooh what a relieving statement we have here. Lol. I am struggling singing high notes but I find my voice really really comfortable singing low notes. I'll just look at it as an edge.. Go Altos! :D

I took voice lessons in college, this is exactly how your professor would tell you. They don´t go over the singing with you because your not finding their voice, you have to find your voice. If you really want to learn to sing professionally, a piano or keyboard is going to help you practice.

Hi, I'm an alto, and I can't sing the high notes!  But many choir pieces make altos sing them anyway!  I'd love to just be able to focus on the lower notes, but am always being expected to sing higher, where my voice gets weak and thin.  I was wondering how altos can manage to reach the higher notes!

We love our altos! ❤️ They are like a filling to a sandwich, the creamer to a coffee 😁 it's a special skill to have good hearing to become an alto, it requires a lot of voice control that's not easily learnt.

From the comments it seems that as an Alto II I lucked out on Chorus Teachers/Professors. Both of them would have complex, 8-12 part music that would have different sections singing the melody while the others harmonized; no one was put above or below the others. All voices were needed and wanted, and while we were proud of our own separate parts, we were even more proud singing together as a group.

My voice is so deep, that sometimes I sing with Alto II
(Tenor) It's so sad, that Soprano always got the melody. 😭

I’m an alto and I love it! Best part is I can belt out a song when I sing with my church choir. I don’t need the microphone like the sopranos do!

In my school's choir, the sopranos are literally SO QUIET and us altos are like carrying the through the song and we only got the melody ONCE!!! And even then, when me and my friend who's in soprano were talking about it, she thought THEY had the melody and we almost got into a fight about it until she remembered that WE were singing the melody in Try Everything. Altos are way too underrated...Like Treasure Planet.

One of the more famous contralto pop singers was the late Karen Carpenter.  She had a beautiful rich, expressive, resonant voice.

My voice has always been a little deep for a girl. When I was in choir, the teacher would constantly try to force me to hit notes so high for me, they'd strain and even hurt my voice. For a long time, I believed I couldn't sing. Fast forward a couple years, and I was caught singing in my comfortable range to Amy Winehouse's Rehab by my old boss. Turns out she was a former vocal coach; she told me right then and there that I was an alto, and had a beautiful singing voice. I just started training ny voice again and I gotta say how underrated altos are. I've come to accept and even love how low and sultry my singing voice is; I love doing duets with my soprano fiancee because of the vast differences in our vocal ranges.

I was trained classically and was taught to use head voice only, just strengthen it in lower notes. Never used chest voice.
