I like to think Bumi might have been close to his uncle Sokka growing up. Maybe Sokka was the best suited to show him he could be strong, bending or not.

Makes me wonder how Bumi’s relationship with Aang was like. I mean I know he was sad that Bumi was born a nonbender but he still loved him. I bet Aang would be proud that Bumi eventually became an airbender!

Much as I'm glad they did address it, I still think they really brushed over the notion that Aang was a neglectful father. It does make sense, though. He's got all this pressure on him to be the Avatar but also to produce more airbenders. Imagine that moment where he realises that Bumi can't airbend. Imagine the disappointment which must have appeared on his face, even for a moment. Now imagine little Bumi seeing that disappointment. That moment probably never left his memory.

I think Bumi made Aang proud by doing the best he could; sure, Aang could’ve been a better dad to his other kids, but he still loved them.

This, all of this, hits so close home, I feel vandalized

Being the untalented eldest sucks like the baggage that comes with it

People dont realize how much of a crappy postion Aang was left in. He is the last airbender AND the Avatar. While I believe he loved all three of his kids, he had to priotize Tenzin to ensure his culture survived to furture generations, and that the next Avatar had a fully capable teacher. Remember the Avatar's duty is to the world, first and foremost. Aang probably would be out of Republic City for long periods of time often. So whatever time he did have probably was to train Tenzin. So I dont think Aang was a "horrible" father like I see many describe him as, just flawed and human like in real life. Plus I think the show wasnt trying to paint Aang as a bad person, becuase clearly Kya and Bumi loved their dad based on this episode. I think they just wanted Tenzin to realize that their dad wasnt as perfect he thought he was.

I wish Aang talked to him, like in this moment-
You know?
That moment all sons dream of with their dads.

Even 170 years after his death, Sozin's actions are still hurting the world. The amount of stress on Aang's shoulders must have been unbearable. Aang not only had to teach Tenzin the art of airbending, but he also had to teach the Air Nomad way of life to the Air Acolytes. Knowing how he was in the original series, I'm pretty sure Aang would have tried to teach Bumi and Kya the Air Nomad teachings, even without them being airbenders, but he respected their decision to not continue. Aang was not the type of person to force others into something they didn't want.
Not only that, but Aang was also 12 when he ran away, meaning he didn't fully understand the meanings behind all the ceremonies. This was shown in the Graphic Novel: The Rift when he went to Crane Fish Town to perform a celebration started by Avatar Yangchen. When he was asked about the celebration's significance, he couldn't recall because Gyatso said he was too young at the time. So many of the Air Nomad values and customs he likely had to restart from scratch.

The one thing that a child would want, is to make their parents proud of them.

Ngl, i would like to learn more about Bumi's past, imagine being the first son of the last airbender and being a non-bender.

I think Bumi's issues arent just from Aang's focus on teaching Tenzin, but more Bumi seeing himself as a failure, despite Aang most likely being rather proud of him.

I find it amazing Aang names his kid Bumi after his childhood best friend.

I feel so bad for bumi. Imagine how he must have felt growing up as a non-bender to the avatar. It's like the opposite to tenzin. Tenzin had the world look to him to revive a culture whilst bumi had a world probably look down on him cause he can't revive a culture and being a first born. No wonder he tried so hard and achieved so much, he probs felt he had something to prove.

I am sure Aang loved all his children, regardless of if they were airbenders or not, but I’m thinking that he should have done a LOT more to convey that. It’s sad that Bumi still feels like he needs to apologize for not being able to airbend decades into his adulthood (as far as he knew at that point).

I wonder if part of the reason his bending powers didn’t kick in during his childhood was because he already felt like he couldn’t measure up to his family…

Okay I’m definitely like Bumi.

I’m a kooky guy with a deep sense of sincerity for my family who loves his parents and especially father and who wants to strive to make the world a better place.

I bet he would be proud of bumi even though he wasn’t born a air bender but he has done his part in protecting the world like he did
