Seeing Aang hug Bumi still hits me. Gone 100 years, and his friend is still alive

It’s fun, upon rewatching, to realize that Bumi was trying to train Aang for the final battle. “Typical Airbender...” and “Sooner or later, you’re going to have to strike back” are great foreshadowing statements. What a writing team!

"why did you do all of this?"
"Because it's fun messing with people"

Literally the most honest answer Ive ever seen anyone give on this show XD

I love Bumi’s “Choose wisely” line. The little smirk he’s wearing just says he *knows* what Aang’s thinking and is basically giving him the old “Are you sure?”

Bumi is 112 years old, has human peak condition and easily the most powerful male Earthbender in the world. I wish i can age like him.

Notice the Earth bending variations Bumi is using:
1:12 and 1:22 Fire bending style
2:11 Water bending style
2:30 Sand bending and last but not least...
3:55 Air bending style.

Uncle Iroh was right, understanding the other elements is key.

5:25 I never noticed til now that when he opens his eyes, he’s holding back tears at the realization that his old friend is still alive. And remember, this was right after the episode where Aang went to the Southern Air Temple and learned that the Air Nomads had been wiped out. He had to have been at his lowest point. He'd been gone a century, and it seemed like everyone he ever knew was dead. And then, Aang finds Bumi again. And in that moment, Aang realized that there was at least one person, one piece of his past not lost. The feeling he must have felt would have been indescribable.

I really like how Bumi knew Aang wouldn't chose the 2 people (who are probably non-benders since they carry weapons) as the options. Especially since he knew Aang so well, he probably anticipated him being clever and choosing the "frail" old man as an opponent.

There’s something in Bumi’s character that I think isn’t talked about enough. Aang was one of Bumi’s closest childhood friends, and when he found out the air nomads were wiped he’d have been devastated. When he caught Aang in his city he had to be overjoyed to see his friend alive. Yet he reserved his emotions because he felt a duty to impart his wisdom on the Avatar. He probably came up with the whole plan in the first 30 seconds of meeting Aang, so indeed he is a genius too

The only true mad geniuses are the writers of this show

It’s really sweet Aang would eventually name his first-born son after his oldest friend. Seeing him go after Bumi to hug him, after realizing who he was, Aang must have been extremely happy and relieved to know that someone he once knew over a hundred years ago was still alive! Bumi also, which is why he did all of those challenges instead of being straight with him same with the feast he threw at the beginning.

(Season 1) Bumi: You must master the 4 elements and confront the fire lord, and when you do *I hope you think like a mad genius* .
(Season 3) Aang takes away Ozai's bending using a technique he learned from a giant lion turtle.
Bumi: You've learned well, Aang.

If you compare this to Bumi's feat in the eclipse, you can see that he was just completely toying with Aang here.

Aang did think like a mad genius and took bending away from the firelord.

When you realize Bumi was the only friend Aang knew that stayed alive long enough to wait for him. That's true friendship right there.

This raises some really interesting thoughts: Bumi must have heard about what happened at the Air Temples and been pretty sad. He must have thought Aang was killed and likely believed that all the way up to the events of The Boy in the Iceberg, or even until he met Aang face to face (‘cause even when he found out the Avatar had returned, it would still be super unlikely that it would be Aang).

He probably developed his own theories as to where the Avatar was. Because the Fire Nation believed that they had successfully wiped out all of the airbenders, the next Avatar in the cycle would be a waterbender (which ended up being Korra). That is why the Water Tribe raids happened, for 60 years to no avail. Naturally the Fire Nation was confused, because they thought all possible airbending Avatars were dead and they never found any waterbending Avatar. Zuko thought that an airbender somehow survived and was really old (which now that I think about it, doesn’t make sense—wouldn’t it be more logical to assume the Avatar was now an earthbender? Even a waterbending Avatar would have been very, very old—if I were him, I would have thought it was Gran-Gran when I saw her.)

Anyway, I wonder if Bumi himself ever went to look for the Avatar? He sure had a lot of time to think about it. He was also the only earthbender in The Order of the White Lotus—which was mainly people the perfect age to be possible Avatars.

I don’t know. There are so many interesting things to think about with this show, that’s what’s so great about it—everything actually goes really deep and is super intricate.

I just realized Bumi is also the name of Aang’s son

This makes me happy 😁
