In this video, I explain the different types of lye that can be used to make soap, why they're different and when you use each type.
This is not a video about lye safety, there are plenty of those on YouTube, this video goes into detail about the different types of lye, sodium and potassium hydroxide.

🧼*Disclaimer*🧼
Although my cold process soap making tutorials are of a tutorial nature, they are intended for people who have a good understanding of making cold process soap. The information given is based on what works for me, however, there are lots of variables associated with cold process soap making and I, therefore, take no responsibility for the results achieved when using the techniques or methods explained in these tutorials. Cold process soap involves the necessary use of sodium Hydroxide (lye) which is a very dangerous substance. Before attempting and cold process soap making you should ensure you are fully aware of the lye safety procedures and always wear the correct safety equipment when making soap.

Vey interesting. As someone who has never been good at chemistry, I found this very informative and easy to understand. Thank you.

I saw a YT video of someone chopping their wood, making the ash to make the lye, like the whole process tip to tail. It was crazy labor intensive!

Thank you Lisa. Always good for people to know the why as well as the how. I also wanted to tell you that I made a really cute cat soap using your mold and your technique of brushing the embed with activated charcoal mixed with water. That kitty really pops! Thank you you for sharing your knowledge.

I just thought of something (5:27) sorry for interrupting, I must share: Did you watch True Detective Season 1 where the police go and speak to this murdered girl's mother? In the interview she cries and raises her hands and she has huge red knuckles and we can see her nails and they are splitting and broken. They really looked quite terrible, she used to work at a laundromat or a dry cleaners for 30 years. I just put together the effect of lye on your hands this second. It is true, it will eat your hands if you're not careful. Sorry for interrupting, carry on....
