the irony is that Lord Nelson's last words sound more like an April Fools story than _"Don't give up the boat"_

I hear the entire naval community yelling "ITS A SHIP!"

If you look into Nelson's career, the part that jumps out at you is that he has no concept of fear. His battles basically consist of "I'm going to use a strategy so ballsy that nobody would ever think I would do, so that is exactly why I am doing it". He broke basically every naval heuristic for battles. He sailed into the wind, he deliberately had his t crossed, among other things.

Who else noticed that the wave lines in the Trafalgr scene all said "Ship"?

Admiral Nelson's real last words were "Kiss me, Hardy (Nelson's Flag Captain)" according to three eye witnesses.

Well if the HMS Victory ever needs a new mast, the Swedish planted a strategic forest of oak trees in 1831 but...sail ships were no longer used when the trees matured.

For anyone reading who is saying Nelsons last word were "Kiss me Hardy", that's just not true, I'm sorry. Nelson did say "Kiss me Hardy" but it wasn't even the last thing he said to Captain Hardy!

The three witnesses to that line are written accounts from the ship surgeon, the ship's Chaplain and the ship's Purser, all three of which say Nelsons final words were him repeating something like "thank god I have done my duty". Even then the Surgeon, who was a little busy at the time, noted that he didn't actually witness Nelson last words, only returning to Nelson after he could no longer communicate.

@extrahistory : Gang I would love for you to do a series on Nelson, he's such an interesting and impactful person and it would be good to do if for no other reason than to put the "kiss my Hardy" to rest. I've been surrounded by this part of history my entire life, I can see HMS Victory from my house and I've done work at many of the navel museums in the area. It is so disappointing to me that his final words, which mirror the Trafalgar signal before the battle, are seemingly lost.

“DON’T GIVE UP THE BOAT!” Nelson said calmly.

Fun fact: you can actually visit the HMS victory at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth, UK. As of writing this, it’s currently being repaired, but you can still walk on the decks, and stand where Nelson was actually shot.

My family visited the Victory once. My sister saw the plaque that said “here Nelson fell” and commented that it was rude of them to make a plaque where he tripped.
We have not let her forget it.

Lord Nelson's actual last words befitted both his gift for inspirational quotes and his stature as Britain's greatest hero: "Thank God, I have done my duty!"
