Haven't seen the video and the debate but my first & final answer is NO, do NOT train with live blades. First and foremost, I'm treating Guro Anastacio as a Canadian. NOT a hyphenated Canadian. I'm not only looking at the perspective of safety among its practitioners in FMA, which are probably predominantly people of non-Filipino heritage, but also looking at it from Western civilized eyes. Accidents already happen with dull, aluminum training blades, including ones made of polypropylene (or whatever composite made material), hence you see trainees wearing eye gear, head gear, body armor, etc. Now here's the social, cultural perspective from outsiders, I'm sorry to say, Filipinos/Filipinas in general, with the exception of Western trained professionals (including those simply assimilated in Western societies for decades), are not known for observing safety practices per Western safety standards. This is not to say that all natives of Western civilized societies practice, train with safety in mind, it's just that positive stereotypes about cultural, societal norms about the Philippines are outweighed by negative ones. You have to notice the little details that seem unimportant. The following request is NOT intended for Guro Anastacio (btw, he's half my age and I could be his Manong, LOL) but for all Guro(s) of FMA, young or old, of Filipino heritage or outsiders, be good ambassadors of the art, use dull, thick aluminum trainers at the most to simulate correct weight of a real blade. Practice safety. Pass down good cultural, societal habits for the next generation. In addition to oneself, you'll eventually run out of partners to train with if you injure them, unless you injure or kill yourself first. This will be a separate topic that probably belongs in a non-martial art forum: mass immigration from societies and cultures incompatible with Western culture. Do you want to teach/share such arts to these people?! That was a rhetorical question.

I believe training solo with live blades is still important because you need to learn to respect the edged aspect of the art. You can get over confident and negligent when you train soley with blunt training weapons. You start hitting parts of your body that technically would resemble being cut by a live blade. If you get cut, you don't respect the live weapon enough. At least for forms or carenza, you should once in a while train with live blades, but you don't have to do it at full speed. At least that's what I was taught. Training with a partner usong live blades, that is questionable.

Thank you, Mister M. Anastacio maybe in the future could you show us how to depend oneself from an aggressor with the same kali expertise

I personally love playing with my knives much more than my stick. I'm appreciating the beauty of the blade using my martial art. Also on my opinion very few people will actually say that the art of Kali is only viable when you started using it with real weapons. I mean first of all the law of ones country that should be taken seriously because what's the point of practicing with knives if you can't use it in real life situation (that is if you train with it as a self-defense weapon), also saying that not implementing your art to the real blade is actually a form of belittling the art. Kali is a martial art that can be use to any kinds of things as long as you understand the attributes (like Doug Marcaida once said about attributes of different objects) No grandmaster said otherwise. What can I say about your opinion is that, THAT is your own translation of your martial art so I totally agree with you.

Love your vids :))

Id love to see the Insurance rates a school gets when they announce they train with live blades.

Training with live blades is insane . One, you could seriously hurt, injure, and even kill yourself or someone else. Two, you can still learn using rubber knives. Three, Insurance companies would have a field day.

in all honesty the moment i started training with knives i`ve always used live blades but, i only train the basics that you`ve taught standard, both pikal forms and the stab slash. i do train slow though to make sure i don`t cut myself lol. i train with every knife i own just to familiarize myself with it. i never train live with a partner however but, i`m not doing it out of ego or to look cool. i just want to familiarize myself with what i carry.
