It would be more impressive if he had an electron microscope as some of the components in the cpu are only hundreds and sometimes tens of nanometers in size, even in 1996 (a nanometer is 10 atoms in length).To put that into perspective, a blood cell (like the one shown in the video) is about 7 THOUSAND nm wide (70000 atoms wide).
