Robert probably wasn't getting sick from the rare asbestos, but he was probably inhaling to much coal dust. In HMB nuclear tech mod when mining coal the coal creates a small dust that when the player comes into contact with it adds to the sickness meter. the only way to avoid this is to craft a crude face protector from wool cloth, or you can make a gas mask.

Them exploring the giant hole that giant parasites had dig out instead of going to their house was probably the best decision they have ever made
