I don't think he is saying that we can't say "I love you". I think he's making a point. And think about it. Honor, respect, and commitment are components of true love. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves and to love Almighty God with all of our being. So, love is ultimately the principal thing when applied properly. But I definitely get his point. Selfishness is not cool and true love is not just a feeling. It is action. Just my two cents.

I am alone because my loved one is gone and I’m not lonely I just can never want or love another, solitude suits me I rather my own company than be with another I could never love as much. Loneliness and solitude are two different things.
