This is actually a really good point.. I have trained bjj for 3 years and people think because you know a shoulder lock, or couple judo throws it is a self defense.

Now days people carry knives and guns, run at all costs, CCW or carry, or learn a strong T kick to create space.

I am also a handheld type of guy 24/7 from the age of 12 but in the bar or somewhere you are not able to carry like on vacation things happen Muay Thai and bjj, I can’t teach my kids gun skills for the street where I am from but I would say a mix of all of them is better then a mix of just the one skill
