This is why you hate queue jumpers

Queues are simple: you join at the back and wait your turn. But there's a whole branch of psychology devoted to studying how they work. Wimbledon publishes a guidebook on how to queue and major brands are obsessed with stopping you leaving to go elsewhere. The Guardian's science editor, Ian Sample, explains

I live in Greece, and---forget about it. No matter how long or short the line, people will cut in front of you as if you're just not there. Even at the bank, the next person behind you will cram in and stand right at your side at the teller's window counting your pennies. It's insulting beyond words and I don't know how I've avoided shoving these people to the ground.

You also notice banks and post offices with 4 service windows and only 1-2 tellers---it's more to their profit to waste your time than to pay another teller. It's one of Business' favorite insults.

A rather obvious tip. But if you are in line for the porta-potties (generally a queue I'm eager to get through quickly), look for the queue with the most men. Chances are, it will move faster.

The psychology of these things is fascinating.

Its strange, After living in Italy for many years I found that people pretty much cut in front of any cue (especially the old generations) It would drive me nuts but Italian friends of mine would say its most likely a combination of a nation where if you dont look after yourself nobody will do it for you and heavy regional attitudes where a real sense of greater good is diminished. Your just an ideological idiot if you dont look after your own. (kind of exhausting for me as a Brit) Its crazy how a cue can say a lot about how you view fellow country-men.

I've been in a U2 line and those folks are serious about their queue! We got two numbers by those who were at the front of the line to ensure that we all stayed in our proper spots. It worked fairly well although many Americans aren't as rigid and when their friends showed up later and wanted to join those who had been waiting in line all day, some didn't care and others got huffy. Queue drama!

It makes me mad when people in line behind or move up on me or touch me. It is unpleasant for everyone so just chill - it does no good, so just keep your space and distance.

A guy just blatantly skipped me in the queue at the supermarket a few minutes ago. I am absolutely livid. He knew he skipped me, I knew he skipped me but nobody saw and I didn't say anything so frustrating

Unfortunately, cutting in line & bullying go hand in hand. Also, the bigger/physically stronger person you are, the more likely they are to do it, because they can’t be physically challenged.

Anglo nations have a literalness of mind and dutifulness of culture that isn’t universal.

One can be in a long line not for the quality of the product but because one company has monopolized the product. So you are forced into a queue.

The reason why I'm watching this is because I just got cut in front by a queue cutter and the service girl served her immediately without realising that I am the one waiting next in line and even when I complained about it within 2 seconds, the girl finished up doing the Q cutter's stuff and gave her what she wanted and let that cutter go before apologising to me ... The incident totally destroyed my christmas eve.

Now I have a vengeance against such Q cutter and such service counter staff, I hope terrible things happen to especially the Q cutter so they would learn not to do such things again ...
