In memory of the brave Naik Maninder Singh, a son of Fatehgarh Churian village in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, born on August 24, 1990. He hailed from a military family, with his father, late Sukhdev Singh, having also served in the army and sacrificed his life while in the line of duty. After completing his school education, Naik Maninder Singh followed in his father's footsteps and joined the army at the young age of 18 in 2008. He was recruited into the esteemed Punjab Regiment, renowned for its courageous soldiers and numerous battle honors.

After several years of dedicated service, Naik Maninder Singh found love and companionship in Ms. Akwinder Kaur, and they were blessed with a son named Ekam Jot Singh. By 2019, he had already devoted over 10 years of his life to the army, operating in various challenging field areas.

Siachen Glacier Avalanche: November 18, 2019

In November 2019, Naik Maninder Singh's unit was deployed in the northern sector of the Siachen glacier in Jammu and Kashmir, one of the most remote and inaccessible parts of the glacier, especially during winter. The soldiers diligently manned designated posts and conducted regular patrols to monitor the border area. On November 18, 2019, while on one such patrol with Sep Manish Kumar, Sep Veerpal Singh, and Sep Dimpal Kumar, a devastating avalanche struck, leaving them with little time to react. They faced extreme risks, maneuvering the snow-clad terrain at heights of 19, 000 feet, enduring the harshest of weather conditions on the world's highest battlefield.

Avalanches in this region are triggered by the accumulation of snow, often due to morning sunlight or when the slope of accumulated snow reaches an instability threshold between 60 to 80 degrees. Despite the presence of the Snow Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) and its observatories issuing warnings, this avalanche went undetected.

The army swiftly initiated a rescue operation, employing a team with specialized equipment. However, the avalanche had buried the soldiers under tons of snow, and their lives couldn't be saved. Naik Maninder Singh, at the young age of 29, proved to be a valiant soldier, laying down his life in the line of duty. He leaves behind his grieving wife, Smt Akwinder Kaur, and young son, Ekam Jot Singh, as a testament to his sacrifice and dedication to the nation.
