David Gilmour about Richard Wright R.I.P

Guitarist and solo star David Gilmour was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution title at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka -- then dedicated it to late Pink Floyd bandmate Rick Wright.
Collecting the award, Gilmour said of Wright -- who died last month - "he deserves this just as much as I do".

And to a standing ovation, Gilmour dedicated a toast to his friend and colleague who played keyboards in Floyd for many years.

Gilmour's stunning performances have been gracing best-selling recordings for four decades, since joining Floyd in 1968 to fill in for Syd Barrett and taking an ever dominant role in the writing and direction as well as providing the band's signature guitar sound.

He became leader of the reconstituted band in the 1980s after Roger Waters' departure, presiding over two more studio albums, as well as releasing a number of solo albums.

Collecting the Outstanding Contribution to Music award -- sponsored by Gibson Guitars -- Gilmour said: "I'm going to dedicate this to my old friend and colleague Richard Wright who died a couple of weeks ago with whom I've worked for 40 odd years.

"There's all sorts of music I won't be able to play without him which is a source of great sadness for me," Gilmour said. "One of the last things he wanted to do was play a big outdoor festival such as Glastonbury which we were unable to do.

"Anyway, as I say he deserves this just as much as I do. You could say that he worked in the position of second fiddle to the pushier chaps at the front, but his work was vitally important to our entire career."

This still makes me cry. It's hard seeing your idol choke up while toasting another one of your idols after he passed, even 4 1/2 years later...

I agree, He was underrated by some. Which that was wrong. He is a brilliant man. You can tell that Mr.Gilmour was having a hard time dealing with the loss of his friend. I know we don't know him as well as Mr.Gilmour does. But I Feel his Pain. R.I.P Mr. Richard Wright. We miss you, Shine On

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has issued the following statement regarding the death of keyboardist Richard Wright:

"No one can replace Richard Wright. He was my musical partner and my friend.

"In the welter of arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was frequently forgotten.

"He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound.

"I have never played with anyone quite like him. The blend of his and my voices and our musical telepathy reached their first major flowering in 1971 on Echoes. In my view all the greatest PF moments are the ones where he is in full flow. After all, without "Us and Them" and "The Great Gig in the Sky, " both of which he wrote, what would The Dark Side of the Moon have been? Without his quiet touch the album Wish You Were Here would not quite have worked.

"In our middle years, for many reasons he lost his way for a while, but in the early Nineties, with The Division Bell, his vitality, spark and humour returned to him and then the audience reaction to his appearances on my tour in 2006 was hugely uplifting and it's a mark of his modesty that those standing ovations came as a huge surprise to him, (though not to the rest of us).

"Like Rick, I don't find it easy to express my feelings in words, but I loved him and will miss him enormously."

I suppose Wright was often looked over because he was such an understated man. But he had a hand in most of the finest Floyd moments, and, while just about everyone else got the lions share of the attention due to their strong personalities, can you really imagine that an album like DSotM or WYWH could ever have been made without him? He was a phenomenal musician and composer.
