David Gilmour pays tribute to Rick Wright - The Endless River

As Pink Floyd release their new - and probably last - album, David Gilmour speaks to Absolute Radio about the musical genius of bandmate Richard Wright.

Rick Wright was essential to Pink Floyd putting out the beautiful songs we all love.

It's a shame Rick was shunted to the margins. His keyboard talents weren't, as far as I can tell--being a Floyd devotee since the release of Atom Heart Mother and seeing them the first of 22 times in 1972--but his voice and style of creativity were pushed to the side after Meddle when Roger seemed to find his killer instinct. Listen to the song "Stay" from "Obscured by Clouds". On the refrain where he sings such words as "midnight blue turns to grey" you hear a man of character and passion making the most of vocals that do NOT test the limits of his range. The character alone is unique and timeless. His singing the lead on "Echoes" in the Pompeii coliseum makes one wonder why this guy was not a dominant force going forward. Perhaps he needed a band of his own. We who know Floyd will always love you, Rick.
