Navigating PhD career options can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re deep in the trenches of research. I’ve realized that many PhD programs focus heavily on academic success but don’t always prepare us for life beyond the degree.

This video dives into how you can take control of your future, answering the pressing question: after a PhD, what next? Whether you’re dreaming of academia, industry, or something entirely different, the key is to develop a strategic plan that keeps your options open.

One powerful approach is building what I call "career markers"—specific achievements and skills that signal your readiness for different roles. For example, if you’re considering academia, it’s crucial to focus on publications, conferences, and technical training. But what about those who want to transition from academia to industry? Here, internships, workshops, and networking events can provide invaluable connections and insights. These markers don’t just show expertise; they demonstrate your genuine interest and ability to thrive in your chosen path.

The video also discusses how to explore post-PhD career options without feeling locked in. It’s okay to start with multiple ideas—academia, industry, or even science communication—and refine them over time. Testing these paths is like trying on different hats. Maybe you attend a workshop on public policy and love it, or you realize science communication isn’t quite for you. The beauty of this process is that nothing is wasted. Skills gained in one area can often be reframed to support a new direction.

One important takeaway is that jobs after a PhD require more than just academic accomplishments. They often depend on how well you can adapt your experience to meet the needs of the role. Employers outside academia look for skills like collaboration, communication, and project management, which can all be cultivated during your PhD. Learning the "language" of your desired field—whether it’s academia vs industry—is another essential step. By immersing yourself in relevant networks and communities, you show that you’re serious about the transition.

Ultimately, this framework isn’t just about landing a job; it’s about long-term growth. Reinvention is key in today’s job market, and combining experiences from different sectors can create a truly unique and fulfilling career path. Whether you’re just starting your PhD or nearing the end, this mindset will help you stay adaptable and focused on building the future you want.

Many, many years ago life was different. I joined a huge industrial research lab, a bit like Bell Labs, with just a standard Physics degree.
Almost on Day One, I was tasked to investigate, model and design communications protocols and topologies for telephone networks in mountainous areas.
My colleagues were tasked immediately with say working on novel fibre optic materials or designing ultra high power semiconductors.
No training period : just a belief from the lab that they could be handed major tasks just after leaving University.
I doubt that it like that today.

What about a Plan D, where you want to do research in industry?

Hii Dr. Andy! Lovely video and content. Manifested this probably! I have a question, as a person in SciComm now, what would you suggest to a third-year PhD scholar to do in order to pursue SciComm as a career? how to sort of make an identity online?
