The clip at 3:29 really convinced me to check it out

It's about time we had a Kermode rant

I know this is another sequel, like Top Gun Maverick, but I'm just glad we're seeing summer blockbusters come around again that aren't all dressed up in superhero spandex. A return to proper popcorn entertainment that you can just enjoy for what it is.

I enjoyed it. It was exactly what I expected it to be - an old fashioned summer blockbuster.

Eaxh to their own I guess.

Watched it as a fan of Daisy & was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it! This genre is usually not my cup of tea but Loved this one! Might even watch it again this weekend

I wasn't expecting a Kermodian rant about this. Perhaps someone should write a script for a film called 'Rant', in which Mark runs towards films and then rants at them.

kermode's description of this as just 'OOO RUN TOWARDS TORNADOS AAA SCARY RUN AWAY FROM TORNADOS' is honestly amazing

“Where are Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton when you need them?”

Well, I mean… 😕

This might be the movie about which I disagree with Mark the most (even more than Hereditary). I went in with pretty low expectations and was pleasantly surprised how much I was blown away by it.

I loved the characters and DO think there was good chemistry between the leads and character development. It's not just running towards a tornado and then running away. Each encounter with the tornadoes is different, and each one has a reason to be in the plot either for exposition purposes or for character development, or both.

The CGI is also excellent. By the end, I was really invested in what I had expected to be some random summer popcorn movie.

Edit: No pun was intended when I wrote "blown away, " but now that I've noticed it, I do intend it.

I remember watching Twister as a teen and having fun. I then thought I'd revisit it ten years later. All I got from that was a very clear idea of how much I'd changed from my teen years to my late twenties.

I thought there was great chemistry amongst the cast. Especially between Powell and Edgar-Jones. I can understand his criticisms about the plot and spectacle-forwardness of it all, even though I whole-heartedly disagree on that too.

Does it have the deep human emotion and narrative of “Minari”? Of course not; however, the film never wanted to be that. It wants to be a fun summer blockbuster, with charismatic leads, simple effective plot, and great set pieces. In that the film overwhelmingly succeeds.

I was worried this was just going to be the same film as the original - but I was pleasantly surprised - loved the references to the first film that told me this WAS a sequel and not a remake.

“It just isn’t” I feel like that should be on a T-shirt.

There are 2 big examples now of movies everyone seemed to love(including critics) that I hated and Kermode is the only who agreed, Avatar 2 and Twisters. It’s great to not feel alone Mark, thanks!😂

I felt crazy until I saw this, because I totally agree with Mark and feel so out of step with what the general audience is saying about this movie. It is nowhere near as well made in regards to character and story as the original Twister. All of the character stuff- their dynamics, their relationships, their motivations- are undercooked. The movie is utilizing this generation's incredibly movie/tv literate audience, and our immediate understanding of character archetypes and genre, to fill in the blanks without actually spending enough time with its characters at all. The love story is undercooked, Anthony Ramos's story is undercooked. I feel like I barely know the gang of storm chasers in this movie, unlike the original. Like what's one specific personality trait of Katy O'Brian's storm chaser? Or Sasha Lane's besides the fact that she flies the drone (also besides the fact that they're the ragtag, misfit group of storm chasers- which is an archetype our movie-literate generation immediately recognizes, so they don't need to do any work on actual character at all). I agree with Mark. It felt like the character beats weren't as prioritized as much as the spectacle, and while the spectacle was fun, the story felt almost like a cardboard cut out to me. The combination of spectacle and character was what made the original film work.

Mark knows all about spectacle. He's wearing a pair of them on his nose.

I visited the Twister experience in Universal. It was a lot of fun. You just stood still and watched a simulation of a twister attack a set of a farmhouse.. It was a lot better than I’ve written. Honest.

"Maybe spectacle is enough." - that's a motivational poster quote from a Holywood producer's office wall right there.

Bill Paxton's girlfriend was a 1D character in the original.. But then we also got PS Hoffman rocking to Ritchie Blackmore shreds while chasing the tornado and that was just the best!
